“He tasted like heartbreak and hope, and my skin lit up with a thousand heat spots.”
Mila is in London for a month, working for her brother, and grieving a lost love. Ever the eternal optimist, she doesn’t let her bereavement define her or her days. A shocking incident brings her into contact with Ames.
“I’d felt something deep within me shift – like it was making room, allowing feelings to bloom in the dead space inside my chest.”
Ames is taciturn, almost hostile, and reluctant where Mila is concerned. That’s because she threatens his peace of mind and in danger of rocking the status quo. He himself is still grieving a loss of his own, and bears responsibilities out of love and duty on his shoulders. He is just going through the motions, but Mila’s presence in his life brings colour, laughter, and evokes new feelings.
“When I say you’re beautiful, that you smell like something as abstract and ridiculous as sunshine, that you absolutely dazzle me – I’m not saying that for any reason except to state a fact.”
I thought this was a moving novel, and I loved the story behind the title. I loved how Mila brought Ames back to life. I loved how Ames acted almost against his own volition but, once he opens himself up to new possibilities, he is welcoming and giving, and really quite romantic.
A beautiful story about love, loss, guilt, and healing. Definitely recommend.
Mila and Ames were thrown into each other’s paths in a startling way. Their initial reaction is a tangible curiosity to want to know more of each other.
They have a common thread running through their lives. They have both loved and suffered loss. The way they deal with it differs greatly though.
I loved the way the author gives these characters their voices. They are so realistic, I can hear them speaking the words in my head. I connected so well to this book, I read it in one sitting. And the explanation of the title of this book? So inspired and romantic. Just perfect.
