There are a few mis-matches between the written instructions and the website to get started, some seem to be translation issues between French and English. However, if you can operate a smart phone and apps, you should be able to work it out ok - I did! My main issue was that written instructions said the tracker was pre-charged and to use "as is" and only charge when the battery was empty. But my tracker was arrived completely dead and needed fully charging before use.
You also need to take out a subscription to enable the SIM card/signal, the options being a monthly direct debit or one-off annual/biannual charges, which are cheaper. The billing also appears to be in Euros, my bank will charge for foreign currency transactions which will make a monthly payment even more expensive. It would have been nice to get a free period of use before having to pay, to establish patterns of use and work out what the best payment option would be.
Once set up though, it was easily attached to the cat's collar. He hates collars and spent most of the evening trying to get it off, but it doesn't appear to be causing him any discomfort, just annoyance and indignity.
There are three modes of use - "standby" which only reports the position when pinged, "live" which continually reports location, and "smart" which reports the position every couple of minutes. We can track the cat on the iphone app and on the website, either by monitoring the History or a confusingly-named "live" option, which is better described as real-time tracking. I was able to monitor him at work, so far today he has been active in the garden, crossed the road (eek!) to explore some hedgerows and now appears to be back home, presumably sleeping in the greenhouse as he has not moved for an hour or so.
Some nice software features, like heatmaps, and the app tells you the state of the battery. I've not tried calling it yet as hearing my voice coming from his collar would probably freak him out!
So far, so good. It feels like a product in beta-phase - it functions well but just needs some tweaking to make perfect, and some minor website/software irritants like the map jumping around when playing back history. I think the main limitation will be battery life - it drained 10% overnight on standby and after a further 7 hours on "smart" it is now currently on 55%. Getting it on and off to charge without getting hands shredded will be a battle of wills between us and the cat, but we're bigger and are in control of the tin-opener.
Haven't even been able to activate the device yet, so currently we've got an expensive ornament sitting on the coffee table. Hoping the servers go back up soon, else we'll have to try another brand. Very disappointing.
Update: Once the servers came up - apparently it was a fault caused by the French internet, which was only communicated to me because I went on Twitter and spoke to other customers - we tried this out. Activating the device was fairly simple, but it did not come fully charged.
We put it on our cat, and tracked her throughout the day. So far, so good. We keep our cats in at night, so we took the device off and left it to charge. I checked the app in the morning, and it showed that the device had been all over our street, despite it sitting on the coffee table, and the cat asleep upstairs all night. Strange.
Since our cat has had it on for a few days, her behaviour has changed. She's noticeably more tired and docile. We took it off her this afternoon, and she's back to her normal self. Another strange thing.
All in, I think we'll be returning this. Unreliable data and service, awful customer service, and it also seems to be affecting our cat. I wouldn't bother with this.
