The story focuses mainly on Constance & Estelle, their friendship and experience at the spa. However the reader is kept up-to-date with the other members of the group through social media updates which I thought was a very modern, clever idea as that’s how a lot of people jeekin touch nowadays.
The author has a great way of describing things. I felt that I could smell the burnt cake, taste the delicious coffee and I could really imagine the spa and coffee shop settings both of which I want to visit immediately!
The ending was quite surprising and wasn’t one that I was expecting. If I’m honest I do wish it had ended slightly differently, but it was a clift hanger so maybe this will make more sense in the next book.
This is the second book in the Friendship Online series but could easily be read as a standalone as everything you need to know is explained at the beginning.
Thank you to Rachel of Rachel’s Random Resources and the author for inviting me onto the blog tour and sending me a copy of this book.
This is a lovely story about online friendships between authors, bloggers and cover designers!
The Weekend spa Break is such a feel good romcom style book, it made me laugh, in part, because I also chat online to a lot of authors and often wonder what would happen if we ever met in 'real life'.
It's an easy read that will hold your attention. It's cleverly written and even includes the odd #hashtag!
The book has a shocking twist which carries a strong message that you should be careful what you post online as you never know who's watching!
This book follows on from the authors first book titled 'The Big Event'. Although it can be read as a stand alone book, I feel it would be enjoyed a little better if you read book 1 first! The 3rd book in the series is due to be released this autumn (2018).
I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever had a 'virtual' friendship!
This was as easy to fly through as 'The Big Event' and I enjoyed it even more. I loved the tranquil, gorgeous setting of the spa and enjoyed the lighter moments, which led to some great drama later on as we got a reveal as to the secrets in the book-why Estelle was acting so shifty and then an explosion as we found out the truth of what had happened with Constance and her fiance, Maxwell. I found myself thinking of shorts in general and the fact that back in the day a magazine would have been my read of choice for example to pick up in the train or to flick through in the evening, and it makes me happy that I've discovered shorts instead, where a book can make you smile and leave a nice story in your head after an hour and a half or so of enjoyable lightness, which is what this is.
Although it would be good to have read the first in the Friendships Online Series, The Big Event, because it’s lovely to continue the story, it really isn’t necessary. Anne John-Ligali drops in just the right level of information so that The Weekend Spa Break works just as well as a stand alone read as it does as part of a series.
I love how Anne John-Ligali packs so much into a novella and she doesn’t stint on the appeal to the senses either. It’s the attention to detail from the aroma of a burning cake to an expensive perfume, or the texture of a fur coat to the taste of champagne that gives a liveliness and vivacity to the story. She includes vivid colour and texture so that reading The Weekend Spa Break is a very stimulating experience.
The plot of this novella is packed with interest with some surprises too and I can’t wait to read the continuation to see what happens next in Constance’s life. However, despite an interesting storyline, for me it’s the pleasure of the underpinning themes and messages that I so enjoy about Anne John-Ligali’s writing. She has great insight into how we think and behave as humans and her writing illustrates the basic human need for friends and family, the difficulties of being a single parent with a challenging child, our reliance on social media and our basic requirement to look after ourselves as well as others. ach of these elements is woven into the narrative in a natural and engaging way so that I found myself nodding in agreement with Constance at times.
I really recommend the Friendships Online Series. In the same way Constance took a short break out of her life to enjoy (most of the time!) her spa break, reading The Weekend Spa Break gave me time out from my busy life and I enjoyed the process very much.
