To overcome the economic aftermath of Covid-19 and empower people to "build back better", our world needs a new social paradigm. That model would need to launch humanity on to a moral growth path by enabling societies to survive the looming existential crises which, Fred Harrison reveals, will converge as a result of the peak in house prices in 2026. Fred offers a wonderfully complete solution called Annual Ground Rent, otherwise known as Land Value Tax, that would be a panacea for society, creating equality, secure homes even for those who rent, lower prices, an end to property speculation (no more evictions for profit), and a massive infusion of funds generated by a thriving social community into restoring public services such as the NHS, Education and Transport etc. A new hope for people, families and our children and grandchildren’s future. A restoration of what he refers to as the "Social Galaxy"! With all other taxes abolished, more money would be raised with Annual Ground Rent than all the present taxes put together.
This is an inspiring concept and a very real possibility. All we need is the courage to take the first steps. And Fred Harrison has shown us how. Book 2 is a must-read and I can't wait for Book 3. There is growing support for this new paradigm, and God know, society surely needs one!
My only problem with Fred and Georgists in general is that they see LVT as the solution to all problems under the sun. Now at least they try to give a narrative for their proposals (finally). Read it and I'm sure you will learn something new.
Minus half a star would have been for the choice of title.
I'm one for less confusing word concepts.
He could have explained a number of things from the outset:
(a) What does he mean by "we are rent"?
(b) Why not also explain (to help clarify the aforesaid) that rent and tax are basically two words for the same thing
- in other words, from an holistic systems point of view, the payment of either/both (rent/tax) is basically contributing (giving back) to the commons that which is owed for benefiting from group participation of workers in/on the commons from which labour produces wealth (goods & services).
Simply put, Land + Labour = Wealth, and landlords (and banksters) are not labouring for the wealth.
They are getting tokens (money) for slices of wealth, which they have not earned by working in the creation of that wealth.
Rentiers (a word missing from the text) are basically getting the benefit from the location for group activities for which they (the rentiers) don't pay rent/tax.
Tenants are paying doubly (= money + lost wealth that could have been bought with money) to landlords:
(1) Money that is earned by the tenant for working (labouring) is paid to a landlord that just owns property in a beneficial location (- why else would the landlord be a landlord at that particular location?)
(2) The landlord has not worked for that money (- again, that is the reason he/she becomes a landlord). He/she gets the benefits of more free time and goodies for which he/she has not worked = the tenant has to work harder to get the same benefits.
Also, the tenant is having to pay rates (county/shire council tax) for which the landlord should be paying for owning the building.
(Most may argue the rates are fees payable for service to the tenant, yet those service fees are maintaining the location from which the landlord benefits from owning the property)
Moreover, something that is beyond money, and just as, if not more, important, is the fact that –
- tenants can be treated like servants (which is a consequence land capture by the landlord)
- and given less than due respect that would normally be given a customer paying ("rent?") for goods &/or services.
No Fault Evictions are a most common feature of this disrespect, the other being unrightful (illegal?) entry into the property without prior arrangement with the tenant (- I had goods stolen because of this).
One would have thought that rent entitles the tenant to the same privileges & rights the landlord would want for him-/herself.
Money is a token credit-energy-credit, and tenants are not getting the returns for the energy-credit (they expend in working) when giving those tokens to freeloaders (banksters included) for renting what should basically belong to the commons.
It is State-sanctioned theft, which one of many of the most massive scales of theft that can be known to mankind.
All as a result of State-capture by the land owning and financial elite.
