The premise was simple. Bruce Springsteen invites a dozen or so New York City musicians--packing banjos, fiddles, accordions and the like--to his New Jersey farmhouse for a three-day hootenanny and leaves the tape rolling. The results are sublime, his 21st album featuring their versions of songs harvested from Springsteen's dog-eared LPs by Pete Seeger. Not all written by Seeger, the songs are how the American folk icon interpreted them, and these organic recordings, with no rehearsals or overdubs, pay tribute with the simplicity and spontaneity he intended. It's not hard to link Springsteen's dissatisfaction with American politics to the protest song "We Shall Overcome" or even the Irish ballad "Mrs McGrath," where he alters the lyrics to read, "I'd rather have my son as he used to be/Than the King of America and his whole navy." But the beauty of these Seeger Sessions are pieces that underscore the mood of the bandleader, which borders on down-home amusement: the bluegrass outlaw ballad "Jesse James," the Dylanesque "Pay Me My Money Down" and the euphoric "Jacob's Ladder," a gumbo-and-whiskey-fueled romp that could pass for the closing hymn at the Church of Asbury Park. --Scott Holter
Review
It's doubtful that any Bruce Springsteen fan ever expected they'd buy an album on which The Boss sings that primary school favourite ''Froggie Went a Courtin'''. Yet, on this lively new album, he covers the amphibian sing-along as well as 12 other tunes popularised by the American folk legend, Pete Seeger.
Springsteen and his fantastic band largely favour folk standards and spirituals over the political songs that got the Communist Seeger blacklisted in the 1950s. Recorded live in the living room of Springsteen's New Jersey farmhouse, it's very much in the spirit of Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes or The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's classic Will The Circle Be Unbroken - a fine example of a contemporary artist taking great delight in collaborating with crack musicians and mining his country's songwriting past.
The album bristles with the sound of fiddles, banjo, accordion, pump organ, horns and Bruce's boozed-up hollers to the band. All of which can be seen on the 30 minute DVD that complements the album.
It's a long way from Born To Run but, in its own foot-tappin' way, no less exhilarating. --Nigel Smith

I am really glad I did. It is a marvellous acquisition. The songs are great and the musicians are superb. Springsteen's gritty lead vocals and a full-throated chorus of backing vocals drive the songs forward and remove any feeling of tweeness, even from "Froggie Went A Courtin'" ! Adding a brass section to an already excellent band boosted the power of the arrangements which were fresh and invigoratingly rough edged. This version of "Mary Don't You Weep" is worth the price of the cd and there are other gems too.
And of course you also get a "making of" Dvd too which not only lets you see the interior of the Springsteen's house but also how the sessions were run. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable watch and listen and thankfully nothing like my memories of Seeger.
Finally decided to get this CD after seeing Bruce perform Pay Me My Money Down at Wembley Stadium in June and so glad I did. I think this is one of his best (at least consistent) albums. He really gets into these songs and they are so catchy that you'll be humming them all day.
I think this record works well as a companion to Wrecking Ball & the softer Ghost Of Tom Joad. It's a great album and well worth getting. The DVD is also captivating. It's clear that all involved had such a great time making this album.
It is a collection of folk / country songs, some better than others, but overall something different and worth a listen.
