I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, it's brilliant! The author has stitched together the interviews so well, I felt like I was listening in on his conversations with the officers. The author's chapter intros are thoughtful, humerous but often poignant and have given me an insight into policing in America that just doesn't come across from the numerous 'cop' shows and novels around. I've even learnt some new vocabulary - I'd never heard of 'de minimis'. In light of recent events in Baltimore I found the interview with the Baltimore narc very thought provoking, and his choice of interviewee for the 9/11 chapter was compelling - I had not considered asbestosis as a long term effect of the attack. Anthropologically speaking this is a great base ethnography for anyone interested in this field of study, and if you are not interested in studying it is a great read anyway! So when's the next book then?

You could write a book on this book. Its action packed, incisive, heart warming, funny, but tinged with sadness and a feeling of being drained at times, of what people can do to each other for little or no apparent reason. Its an excellent insight into the lives of US Law Enforcement Officers in varying roles. The author speaks from a unique perspective as he is a Police Officer himself which can be a curse as the style of writing for Police Officers and Law Enforcement does not ordinarily lend itself to this kind of thing. Police Officers usually write reports and facts for evidential or intelligence purposes. The author thankfully has bucked the trend and tells their stories extremely well and with emotion.

I thoroughly recommend this book, there are numerous books on the Police from all different perspectives but not all are told as well as this one!

We Are The Cops is a powerful and moving account of modern day American policing. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first-hand accounts of ‘life on the job’, and marvelled at some of the astonishing situations that the officers encounter. The anecdotes, sometimes humorous, other times tragic, are captivating - giving insight into the wide ranging spectrum of emotions that accompany the policing profession.

This book was recommended by a friend who is a police officer with the NYPD. It truly is a fascinating read. The author doesn't dominate the narrative but allows officers to tell their stories in a forthright manner. The results are occasionally very sad but, as one would expect, often very funny. Mr Matthews has obviously done his homework and presents a clever, sympathetic insight into an extremely difficult job. This book should have a wide appeal beyond those who have served in police forces in America and the UK. I know police officers are often criticised - this book goes a long way to helping us understand their onerous and thankless task.

This is a most fascinating book providing a candid record of the actions and thoughts of police in the USA today. The verbatim accounts are thoroughly addictive, sometimes shocking, sometimes amusing.

Excellent.

I do enjoy reading memoirs and true accounts of people who work in the emergency services in any country and this was no exception. It shows the best and worse of the public and their attitude towards the police who are trying to keep them safe. In some places it was quite hard reading, especially the chapter titled 9/11 - I won't go into details, but it made me respect the emergency workers who put themselves in so much danger on that horrific day. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who is thinking about joining the police or just appreciates them as I do.

I thought it would be another gun ho book about cops, it was anything but. This book really shows the reality of what these brave men and woman do day in day out and how the author being a british cop helped with braking the ice, getting to the humour as well as heartache of this most difficult of jobs.
I hope he brings out another book as you want to know more about the real world of policing not just what is on the TV
