Product Description

Review

** 'THE WAY OF THE WOMEN combines the stark intensity of a remarkable death-bed chamber piece, which none the less contains humour, with a compendious sweep from 19th-century boomtime in the Cape to the Angolan war (GUARDIAN)

** 'Ambitious and loaded with a narrative energy you will not find - at the same pitch or in the same range - in the work of any of the big names in South African writing ... A masterpiece has arrived (South African SUNDAY TIMES)

** 'Fascinating and moving, this is, above all, a love story (Kate Saunders, THE TIMES)

** 'These are huge subjects ... Without a doubt a novel of ideas but also a very musical one, an 'act of writing (in which van Niekerk poetically breathes new life and new possibility into the country')

Book Description

* A dramatic and compelling portrait of two women's lifelong relationship set against the backdrop of half a century of apartheid in South Africa

Format: Paperback
This was a great disappointment. It is not a new work by Marlene Van Niekerk but a UK publication of an earlier masterpiece entitled AGAAT.The UK publication publication with the ghastly title THE WAY OF THE WOMEN is a misnomer and does not capture the ethos of the novel.I strongly recommend the South African edition which is a superior publication :AGAAT Jonathan Ball Publishers,Johannesburg and Cape Town.

An extraordinary book, one you'll not forget quickly. Beautiful prose, so descriptive you feel you can breath the air of South Africa. Shockingly frank narrative of a racist age conflicting with pure female instincts. A Brilliant book and wonderful read.

What a masterpiece as it says on the front cover.. Hard to get into, but SOOOO worth it, ESPECIALLY if you are an ex-pat like me.. The translator should get a Nobel, too...
