I love stories about beginnings, how things turned out the way they came to be.
Young kid, lowest of the low, comes good. But he's riven with darkness.
I know it's a bit cliched, been done before but the good reviews and the sample I read convinced me to buy the book.
What stopped me finishing the book were the plot devices inserted at various stages. I could almost hear the dramatic music in my head as each twist was revealed. Dun dun dur...
There are some very well written scenes. But stringing them all together without the dun dun dur moments being obvious, didn't do that.

About the Author
Brent Weeks studied at Hillsdale College, before brief stints walking the earth like Caine from Kung-Fu, also tending bar, and corrupting the youth. (Not at the same time.) He started writing on napkins and, eventually, someone paid him for it. Brent doesn't own cats or wear a ponytail.

If you are looking for spell books/dragons/shiny armour/creative backdrop type fantasy then move along now. This is gritty, brutal and is mainly focused around practical deaths (it is about assassins), straightforward scenery (think mediaeval) and political intrigue. It starts with a young youth, but it is not really focused on "coming of age" type plot lines, more on what you may choose to do to survive and what happens when you make mistakes. But as the story and series progresses, more threads are added and a complex web of politics, plotting, magic and love entangle everyone. Not shy of killing key characters, page turning can be a genuine "hold your breath" moment.

Best fantasy series I’ve read in a while. I’m writing this review for the whole series rather than the individual books. I literally galloped through the last book as I couldn’t wait to find out what happened to the main characters. I don’t think the blurb in these books does justice to the epic fantasy, characterisation and pace of these books. If you’re a fan of the likes of Anthony Ryan, Michael J Sullivan and Peter V Brett you’ll enjoy this, it’s not quite as dark but it’s a great story.

I was hoping that the 3 books in this series would be something like Assassin's Creed, especially given the cover art and story description. They aren't. All 3 books are very slow with very little action and the 'hero' has far too many 'crises of conscience' to act in a firm, decisive manner as the 'Wetboy' (basically an assassin with magical talent) he trains to be. Some books you just can't put down. None of the 3 in this series are amongst those. I bought all 3 together second hand and am only delighted I did not pay full price for them.

I did enjoy this book although it didn't grip me like others that I have read. What I liked about it was the character development. I liked the fact that most of the characters where shades of grey rather than your traditional good and bad. It was refreshing in some ways to see that the choices that certain characters made came back later and bit them. This made them more real to me.
I liked the overall story and where it seems to be headed although i'm not going to rush out and by the next book tomorrow. I may eventually get round to it, but it is not high on my list.
What did annoy me in the book was the lack of explanations of what role exactly certain characters had. Whether it was me being dumb or not catching on, it took me a long time to get my head round what the 'shinga' was and the Ka'kari was. For me personally a glossary would have been much appreciated.

A friend got me into this author and after this book I then read through his other 7 novels in about 2 months haha.
Very good writer, ties in his characters and story line really well and certainly has no fear taking the plot to dark places.
It’ll have you hooked from chapter 1.

I almost gave up on this book, I read and reread the first chapter before moving on to another book numerous times. Fortunately I stuck with it at some point as it really picks up and now Brent is my favourite fantasy author. Cracking series.

I have read and reread this series more than a few times now, because it is so easy to. A great entertaining story, with a cool concept and Weeks' real talent for character creation and development.
