The book is good for kids since it offers what to most adults are basic actions. My kids read it and some of the contents are useful beyond Martial Arts

5.0 out of 5 stars The Author Knows His Stuff 23 April 2009
By D. Goodman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I've been teaching martial arts to kids for many years, so I came to this book with a few opinions about what I wanted it to be. As it turns out-- it's a great book I can happily recommend to my young students. Mr. Wilder clearly writes from experience, and he does so with wisdom and humor. My colleagues and I had many laughs recognizing our own students' foibles. In the section called "Pay attention or miss out," he does the math of making faces in the mirror for one minute per class over the course of a year, or spending three minutes in the restroom every class. Perfect! I read it to a group of my students; the kids all laughed, and one of them made a New Year's resolution not to go to the restroom during class anymore.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nuggets of wisdom served in kid-sized bites 3 Aug. 2008
By L. A. W. Vanderpool - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Written in a personable, engaging style that will appeal to kids and adults alike, this collection of short vignettes touch upon a variety of experiences one might have as a student of the martial arts. It illustrates the many opportunities for learning and growth, not only on the dojo floor but in school and at home. Many of the stories offer simple actions for kids to try out so they can put what they read to the test in real life. As a mom who trains at the same place as my middle-school daughter, we both found the book to be an enjoyable and inspirational read that can be picked up again and again, and most importantly, put into action in our lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Informative Book 24 Oct. 2008
A Kid's Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
My name is Jesse and I'm 9 years old. Kris Wilder has been my Sensei for almost one year.
My dad bought me this book so I can study Karate at home. I have learned a lot from this book.

1 - Karate is more than kicks and punches. It teaches you how to control your body and mind.

2 - Family events and school come first. You can miss a few classes if you need to take care of
family and / or school activities.

3 - It was helpful to read about his past.

4 - Kris Wilder is a great Sensei and writer. I enjoy his humor.

I hope to become a black belt someday.

- Jesse

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful advice for kids and their parents alike 3 Aug. 2008
By L. A. Kane - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book really is something special. It shows how just about any child can become one of those few exemplary learners who excel in the training hall as well as in life. Written to children, it is also for parents too. After all, while the martial arts instructor knows his art, no one knows his/her child better than the parent. Together you can help your child achieve darn near anything... The advice provided is straightforward, easy to understand, and written with a child-reader in mind so that it can either be studied by the child and/or read together with the parent. The author is a phenomenal martial arts instructor who has earned black belt rank in three different arts. He has coached kids through the ranks from raw newcomers to experienced black belts. His students have gone on to become world-class scholars and business leaders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Reminders for Me 5 Aug. 2008
By Joe L. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The Way of Martial Arts for Kids
I have been taking Karate for 2 years. I like the book because it teaches me a lot of things about Karate. It reminds me of everything my Sensei says to to and not to do. The book tells me not to miss class so I can get higher ranks faster.
