this song wouldn't feel out of place on Californication mixing mellowness (Scar Tissue) with the more muscular moments on the album. the tune is a grower thanks mainly to the harmonic chorus. it does feel like the band are making a conscientious porgression into an even more spiritual territory. John Frusciantes guitar playing is interesting and creative; and Flea as always adds a vibrant bassline.
the chilis have set themselves a high standard to live up to - this single doesn't rank above their best but is still a quality tune.

For anyone who has grown up with the chilis this single indicates the manner in which the band have matured and where they are heading as hinted in Californication. Anthony's soulful lyrics and voice fit perfectly with the medlodies provided by the rest of the band, whilst John's guitar and effects follows on from what he has been experimenting with on his solo albums. All in all a great song with a chorus line what will be in your head all day.

Finally I have got my hands on new material from the absolute Gods of all that is funky!
This song follows on in the vein of where Californication left off, emptier in feel than the highly polished production of the Blood Sugar Sex Magik days, but none the less striking for it. John is proving to be a wonderful backing vocalist, and his voice accompanies Anthony's beautifully here in the chorus.
They even get away with the vocoder effect in the verse.
The band just sound comfortable with one another, more mature, just playing what the hell they want to, and the result is a fine single. Let's hope for more of the same on the album.

An absolute gem. WIth By the Way being my first ever album, bought for me by my Mother at a filling station 8 years ago, this single reminded me of why I love the Chili Peppers. The two B-sides here are killer, with an unexpected 60's flashback on Teenager in Love and full on funk assault on Time. Definitely worth whatever they're asking.
