Okay, down with there review. The device comes nicely packaged in a white box and was promptly delivered by Amazon Prime. In the box you get a manual (nice and clear English), the Wavlink AC1200, an Ethernet cable (CAT5 or CAT6, not sure?) , power supply and warranty card.
As mentioned, I use this a WIFI extender. This does not have a modem built in ... you can't stick a phone line in it! You could also use it a switch too, as there's 4 100Mbit ports on the device too, but these aren't top-whack 1/10Gbit ports so I avoid using them. If you need a switch, look elsewhere. As a WIFI extender this is hard to beat for the price. Coverage is excellent, especially on the stronger 5GHz channel ... make sure you check out other WIFI signals in the area as 5gig is more prevalent nowadays so try to pick a free slot in the spectrum. You can choose to operate both frequencies if you want, so if you want to give guests access stick 'em on the 2.4GHz channel whilst you bask in the juicy 5GHz. The device is backwards compatible too with 802.11 a/b/g/n etc ...
Setup is fairly straightforward, I did a firmware upgrade as the out of the box software was a bit flakey but since I've done it, the device is much more stable. As a WIFI access point, I left a number of the settings as default and just changed the password and SSID name. The device has a number of other advanced features which can be accessed through the settings: QOS features, using the device as a signal extender/repeater.
All in all, a great device and despite it looking like a space ship from Star Wars, it actually does the job really well. 100% recommended.
Despite an earlier review stating that upon reboot, their specified static IP address did not store, mine did first time (192.168.1.253) without any problems.
I'm using the same SSID for both 2.4GHz & 5.0GHz, both my iMac & Android phone automatically connected to the faster 5.0GHz spectrum.
Range also seems good, on a par with my Apple Airport Extreme.
Something else worth mentioning is there is a wide range of selectable 5.0GHz channels to choose from (36-140). Therefore, you can have non-overlapping 80MHz channels... 36, 52, 100 & 116 for example. Unlike the Airport Extreme, which only has 36, 40, 44 & 48 to choose from.
The only downside is that I'm only getting 90-95 Mbps, as opposed to 150Mbps with the Airport Extreme. Not really a fair comparison though, as the Apple Airport Extreme is an AC1750 device and this is AC1200.
Overall I'm very happy, especially at this price!
The first one set up correctly and acquired an IP address from the main router correctly, the second however refused to acquire an address and intermittently disappeared off the network completely. Messed around factory resetting for hours before finally giving up and sending it back.
The one that works seems stable and has filled the black spot it was bought for.
Others have reported IP addresses not sticking on reboot so I guess in my case it's 50/50. If it does work I can't believe how they do it for less than £30. Pity the Wavlink website isn't working properly. Couldn't find any reference to my unit.
Have re-ordered another so fingers crossed this one will be OK.
Had 3 of these set up as access points getting their IP address from the main router.
Main router had a firmware update (Cos it's a real one as the Wavlink website doesn't even recognise these toy routers.) and all three Wavlinks decided that they would change their role and set themselves up as the main router, all three!!! Each one set itself to 192.168.10.1, turned on their DHCP servers and totally screwed my network up.
Back in their boxes and returned for refund.
Yer pays yer money and takes yer choice. Rubbish.
