Reliable, impressive and easy

Reliable, impressive and easy
I bought my Watson W8681 just over 8 years ago and it’s finally begun to give up.Initially I found the setting-up to be a bit daunting – the whole thing has to be assembled and clamped around a slippery chrome-finished pole (which then needs to be clamped onto an taller installation post) and it’s remarkably big and awkward especially as bits seem to stick out in all directions! Work outside if you can – you’ll need the elbow room. Not only that, you’re obviously a bit wary about damaging anything even before you use it.....There’s metres of USB cable – far too much really so you’ll need some cable ties or Duck tape to tidy it away.Oddly enough, the cable between the indoor display and the PC is far too short – I had to buy a longer one. However, once set up the weather station will automatically seek out your PC and within half an hour or less it’ll be sending information. The batteries in the weather station have all lasted well over a year – mind you, I ensure I don’t put cheap batteries in it!If I were you I’d use Cumulus, a software program run by Sandaysoft – it’s a tidy screen display and from there you can easily connect your station to the internet (perhaps wunderground). If you sign up to the Cumulus forum you’ll find that Steve is excellent as are many of the contributors.Again, your display will need some set-up information input from you but it’s all fairly basic stuff. With Cumulus, files are stored and/or downloaded into your PC to provide a long-lasting log of your weather. The only problems I’ve faced are:1. Doves who visit my garden will insist on perching on the rain gauge or even the anemometer when it’s calm! I’ve yet to resolve that problem.2. The temperature gauge, while screened, does catch the low evening sun and gives excessively high readings sometimes. I’ve seen threads on the Cumulus forum about fitting a second screen but I haven’t had time to follow their advice.Otherwise it’s a great little weather station that I’ll highly recommend. I’m going to buy another one and if I get another 8 years of life from it it’ll be money well spent.(Great kudos item too! My neighbours are all impressed and obviously think I’m something of a geek even though I’m 68!)

The positives: Packaging was all cardboard and recyclable/biodegradeable. All pieces fitted together with no problems. When the batteries were put in the station and the tablet screen it communicated successfully within a couple of minutes and was immediately functioning. The touchscreen takes a little getting used to but its LCD display is necessary to conserve battery life. It lights up when you touch it and becomes very clear for changing parameters and setting maximum/minimum/alarms. If you set it to read data for the minimum interval of every 5 minutes the monitor will hold over two weeks of data before it starts overwriting data. The EasyWeather software is simple and works without issue. As soon as you connect the monitor to the PC it sends the data to the PC and no setting up is required. The tables and graphs are self forming and no input is required. The data can also be downloaded as a .csv file and imported into MSExcel or OpenOffice if you want to further analyse it or produce your own charts.
The negatives: Instructions are basic with pictures and no words on how to put it together. This could be a lot better.
It remains to be seen how long the batteries last as they are not rechargeable but the instructions indicate they should last at least a year.
Altogether a simple yet fully functioning bit of kit. We'll have to wait and see how it stands up to Cornish gales now !.
Additional Note: Now i've had time to investigate I can confirm that this weather Station will work with CumulusMX weather software. You have to name it as a "Fine Offset" station in the settings menu. It runs in a browser window and is very comprehensive but has more functionality than the Easyweather sofware that comes with the station, if that is what you would like.

This kit works well, although I don't find it intuitive. (That may just be me). I do find it strange to design it so that the wind direction arrow is on the same plane, and not far from the cups of the anemometer. This means that the wind arrow swings about all over the place, making it less accurate than it could be.

I purchased this to replace the previous model which had lasted approx 3 years. As others have pointed out, the sensor mast has changed design which is more compact and easier to install.
Unfortunately after around 48 hours the wind speed, direction and rain gauge all stopped working. No amount of battery swapping or reboots would get them to work. The base unit functioned well and connected to my wunderground site with no issues.
    I was issued a refund.

I've owned one of these for 5 years and have just replaced when sadly the stable roof it was attached too vanished in high winds taking the weather station with you

Display is clear and easy to read giving a range of measurements

Assembly is straightforward - just be patient when first pairing the transmitter and display screen. Best tip is put batteries in transmitter, then quickly put batteries in display and just leave. It can take a couple of hours to sort itself out

Once paired operation is trouble free.

Lithium AA batteries recommended for the transmitter, a tv aerial stand off bracket works well for mounting the pole and spraying the connectors with silicon spray is a good idea when assembling

Also suggest downloading the free sandysoft software (just google) if you want to download data to pc - it's much better than the supplied easy weather software

If any parts break over time ( I damaged the wind speed unit moving house) parts are currently readily available from maplins or cpc

Solidly built weather station and relatively easy to assemble. Instructions and set-up were 3/10, translated poorly from original language. Wind and rain gauge are excellent, temperature gauges are off by 2-3 degrees. Even on the highest contrast setting, the screen is hard to read in daylight.

This is a product struggling to be really good but sadly it doesn't quite reach the mark. Mainly because the data is unreliable, the software needs a serious overhaul, and the main base screen need a serious revamp. I have been collecting data now for 4 months solid, it confuses morning dew with rainfall, we have heavy morning dew here, sadly no rainfall for over 8 months or more, yet i have readings of up to 13.2mm of rain, the data that downloads to the computer constantly repeats itself making the time stamps useless, so the daily data can be two different times and dates which ones being relevant is anyone's guess. Also there is no such reading for wind as NWW, or NEE, this is schoolboy knowledge, it should be WNW, or ENE, which suggests the software writer isn't fully aware of weather terminology, and this terminology has to be altered manually to degrees to enter the information into a wind rose diagram program as they use inputs in degrees ie N=0, E=90º etc. asimple script in excel can do this, I just think for this price the program itself should do this. There are times also the computer program cant communicate with the base station for some reason, and need the batteries removed to reset the device, which then communicates fine, till next time, i have had to do this 3 times already, so a few days data has been lost this way. It was quite temperamental when setting it up and took a few days for it to settle down for some reason. I also bought the solar battery charger for the remote sensor array to eliminate the high battery usage as well. At the end of the day its a temperamental device, the device fascia could do with a revamp and more clarity to internal and external readings. Its an ideal intro to weather readings per sé, shame its price tag for this entry level is too high i would have though a more realistic price would be around 49-59 pounds. I will continue useing it.
