1 - Get the small part that screws onto the metal pipe that comes out of your shower wall.
2 - Use a small flat tip screwdriver to wedge out the black rubber washer.
3 - Unscrew the white screen with your fingers or use needle nose pliers.
4 - Push a screwdriver into the opposite end and push out the red water restrictor.
5 - Screw the white screen back in.
6 - Push the black rubber washer back in.
Continue the installation.
I've installed several of these style heads without any hiccup. This had a major hiccup. After installing, the water trickled out. Why? I took everything down and ran it without anything on the pipe coming out of the wall. If flowed like Niagra after a storm. Put it back up with just the bracket, and got a trickle. After looking at every possible connection, I narrowed it down to the flow limiter in the attached picture. I took out the rubber washer, then this devilish piece then reinserted the washer and attached the bracket back up to the pipe. Attached hose and head, Works like a champ! Nice flow. No leaks. No Oil-Rubbed Bronze :( but the price was right.
I used an adjustable wrench with a cloth over the connection. With the Waterpik, you almost didn't need any tools. I'm just a weekend warrior, so it made me feel better. In fact, one of the times I checked the flow, I didn't use my wrench and it went on fine without a leak. Instead of tightening with all your might without tools, use 25% of your strength with a wrench. I used the cloth because the piece going onto the pipe is plastic and didn't want to strip the plastic, for aesthetics. This can really be done "tool-less". I also had residual pipe tape on the threads, not that the item came with any; or probably didn't need any.
If you use the hose that came with the item, it has lots of bends from being in the packaging since the factory. Leave the hose off the bracket for a couple of weeks. Attach during the shower, but when you are done, let it hang. Gravity will stretch out the hose and it will be nice and flexible. In my picture, I have the upgraded hose.
I have tried other Bronzed handhelds and they all stink for at least double the price. I will use this until I need to sell the house. I will reattach the Bronze one when I need to sell. After selling the house, this and the other Waterpik Handheld down the hall, go with me to my next house.
What didn't really work was the mist feature that I had high hopes for. It is more of a fast tight water beam with restricted flow to make the water spread out a little more. Don't expect a rain forest effect, it is more like a garden hose with a spray attachment that has a stinging sensation on your skin if you are close to it. I removed the water restrictor before installing it so I may have killed this feature.
The biggest problem with this shower head is that it is all plastic. Chromed plastic. For $40+ you should get metal parts at least in the connectors. But they do connect solidly ... so far.
There are a lot of complaints about the Waterpik models in other reviews that I can address:
1. It does NOT leak from the main seal if you slightly tighten the plastic grey main connector with a pair of pliers. It does leak and spray all over the place if you don't. Make it tight but not too tight with a tool, your hands might not be strong enough. I do not see water leaking from any of the other connectors that I hand tightened.
2. It makes some noise on some of the spray settings, but it is not a broken or defective kind of sound. To me it sounds like a low subtle rumble but it is not loud. The sound it makes is probably necessary for it to do what it is doing.
3. The hose DOES smell weird. Like petroleum chemicals or a tire tube. At first I didn't think I would care but now it is bothering me. It is a stinky hose.
Edit 6/8/2012: I bought a new hose from Ace Hardware a while back. It is made of real metal and longer. I think it was $14.00. I recommend the upgrade. Once the stinky hose problem is solved, this is a great shower head. No other problems to report and I have learned to love the mist feature.
Update 9/4/2013: Still perfect, no problems whatsoever. It works as well as the day I bought it.
