Product Description

The WaterRower A1 home rowing machine has been designed to mimic the movement of a boat over water and bring you a real rowing experience in the comfort of your own home. Thanks to a unique mono-rail the machine encourages natural and fluid motion and helps practice good rowing technique. Natural resistance is delivered by the water in the sealed tank, and the console display will provide you with feedback on stroke rate, the total number of strokes, rowing duration, distance, intensity and more. The rowing machine has been handcrafted from solid ash wood and features pivoting footplates with adjustable straps. It also can be folded up vertically for easier storage when not in use and has transportation wheels.

Three years after buying it, I'm still very satisfied with my water-rower. I did a lot of research before buying it. I'm an experienced gym user and have owned a gym-quality exercise bike for a decade. I discovered ages ago that it's worth buying high quality kit for use at home because if you buy a cheap option then it is very often clunky, uncomfortable to use and fragile. If you invest a lot in a decent bit of kit then it should last for years PLUS you're more motivated to use it. I can't stand the thought of spending that much money and letting it go to waste!

The water-rower is unlike most other rowing machines in that it is very handsome to look at. It's going to sit in your living room (or where ever) and the wooden finish and design make it much easier on the eye than the usual lots of metal and white plastic.
The water-rower is also very different in that you're not pulling against cogs or chains, but a tub of water. So the action is *very* smooth, and the sound is very pleasant. The action is much less snatchy than most home rowers. Overall it's very easy to use and this encourages me to use it more often.
When not in use the waterrower can be stored upright, so although it is very long you could stand it on end behind a door to tuck it away.
Unlike many rowing machines, the waterrower doesn't use an external power source so you don't have to plug it into the mains. (That always drives me mad, that my exercise bike needs to draw power yet I'm pedalling away producing loads of the stuff!). The only power supply needed for the waterrower are batteries for its monitor.

Downsides: the monitor on mine (a type III a think) has a liquid crystal display which is hard to see in bright sunlight and impossible to see in dim lighting.

Having unfortunately ruined my ankle, and being inclined to fat, I decided to take the plunge and invest in some equipment to allow non-weight bearing aerobic exercise. The choice for high-end rowing kit seems to boil down to WaterRower and Concept2, both of whom have universally excellent reviews everywhere I looked. I chose the WaterRower on the basis of the quiet action and the facility to store it end on when out of use. Both of these features are important for me since I must use and keep the machine in one of the living spaces in our house, and the Concept2 machines are both loud and ugly, as well as being more difficult to store.

The A1 is delivered in two boxes, both of which are reasonably sized and neither of which are heavy. It would be easy enough to transport these to an upstairs room if required. Assembly is easy enough, but make sure you've got a spare 5mm allen key, only one is provided but two are required to tighten each bolt. I found the instructions clear and comprehensible. A siphon is provided to fill the tank but it's a fragile thing and mine seemed to have leak meaning that I had to manually pump in the water. I'd recommend allowing an hour to set up and fill.

In use the A1 is excellent. There is some noise from the seat rails but the nylon straps and plastic pulleys are silent and the main noise is generated by the water sloshing around in the tank. The seat and handle are both far more comfortable than the equivalent Concept2 machine which I've used extensively at various gyms over the years. The action is much smoother than a Concept2, too.

If you are looking for a piece of gym equipment for the home , then look no further.
Rowing machines are known to use more of the body's muscles than any other piece of gym cardio equipment and that is why I bought the Water rower, but the thing that sets this rower apart, is the refinement and quietness of the machine. It took me an hour to put together and fill the tank to the level required and then that was it.
Sit down and row at your intensity and actually enjoy it!!! Apart from the water slushing around the tank( which is very pleasant ) there is virtually no noise . Then just stand it up, using the 'dolly' wheels and put it against the wall, out of the way.
I never thought that a price if gun equipment, made of wood and using water as a form if resistance could be so 'perfect' but it is. Recommended.

There's a lot to like about this rowing machine. It looks great; it has a solid action and a nice feel. The geometry is also good. It feels like a quality rower, however it's let down by a badly designed monitor. I have had one monitor replaced but it's still erratic, doesn't display all the increments and gives multiple key strokes from one press. Furthermore, some of the text on the monitor is ridiculously small and unreadable from your rowing position.
The rumble of seat wheels along the monorail is quite loud so it's difficult to hear the swish of paddle through water and I can't really see the water anyway as mine arrived with a tinted plastic tank.
You can stand it up for storage but check your ceiling height as it's long.
Finally, it sits on non-adjustable feet so if you have uneven floors you'll need all sorts of chocks etc. to get it level.
It's a shame that, for the cost, the monitor isn't better.
