Product Description

Review

Watercolour is a perfect medium for painting water, as it can create some very realistic effects. This is only a small book but it is crammed full of ideas and step by step demonstrations making it an ideal reference book. A variety of techniques are covered including the use of splattering and laying washes. He looks in detail at three of the most common types of water: a deep slow moving river, a fast moving stream and a shallow stretch of still water. The step by step instructions are clear and easy to follow. Yet, as he points out, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to painting water. Each artist has to develop their own unique style and should experiment as much as possible to work out what is right for them. This is a very useful book with lots of ideas and inspiration.-Monstersandcritics.com As one might surmise, the medium of watercolor lends itself well to portraying water, but the rendition of realistic-looking rivers, puddles, and ponds is no easy feat. In this short guide, Dowden generously shares with readers his best tricks and techniques for believably depicting water and wetness. After a short introduction, followed by sections on materials, color, and composition, the book offers the reader the chance to try their hand at painting deep, shallow, or lively water through projects with step-by-step instructions. VERDICT Useful for intermediate and advanced landscape artists, but not those wishing to paint oceans, as this is the one body of water Dowden does not address.-Library Journal USA --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

The pictures in this book are lovely but there is nearly no information about how to get there. It is A5 or less in size and the print is tiny, not good for me as I am slowly going blind so far only one eye. I feel the book was a wast of money, David Bellamy's books are far better value.

I have not been painting for long and was rather daunted at the thought of even attemping the subject of water. This book has helped me produce some pertty good pictures with it's step by step instruction and pictures. Different types of water are demonstrated, deep, shallow, lively and some fabulous puddles. A very useful and enjoyable book.

Maybe not the actual printing quality, maybe it's the illustrations that are just not very clear? There's not enough contrast between the white of the watercolour paper and the masking fluid, for instance. The photo's of technique are just feint, and it's not at all easy to see the technique. A real pity, because the author is clearly a very very good artist
