From the back cover:

'Nothing is more essential to village life and agriculture than water. The eighteenth-century water races of the North York Moors provided it for two hundred years. This book describes how the races were made, maintained and functioned.

Biographies of Joseph Foord (a Quaker who was disowned by the Society of Friends) and his illegitimate son (Joseph Pilmore, the famous Wesleyan preacher) illuminate social life in the Kirkbymoorside area under the sway of the Duncombe Park estate in Helmsley.'

I found this quite enthralling and enlightening, how human ingenuity brought water to very difficult locations, and the lives of those involved.
