About the Author

Born in America in 1946, David Doubilet began snorkelling at the age of eight; by the age of thirteen, he was taking his first underwater photographs with a pre-war Leica in the green sea off the New Jersey coast. Having studied photography at Boston University, he published his first pictures in National Geographic in 1972 and has continued to do so regularly since then, reporting from oceans around the world.

He has captured ground-breaking images of great white sharks, creatures of the undersea desert, flourescent corals and shipwrecks. Widely acclaimed as the world's leading underwater photographer, Doubilet has received numerous awards including 'Pictures of the Year' repeatedly, as well as the prestigious 'Lennart Nilsson Prize' in 2001.

I had unknowingly admired Doubilet's work in many National Geographic articles over the years. The recent Great White cover photo was fantastic although a little untimely as it had to be hidden from my girlfriend who I was going diving with for 2 weeks a month later.
I was proud of a few photos I took on that holiday but when I saw this book I almost threw my camera away. Doubilet takes underwater photography to another level altogether. This book displays Doubilet's talent and dedication to the full with a diverse portfolio taken over many years from all over the world. The light in his trademark above and below water photo's is so perfectly balanced my friends assumed it was manipulated.
Buy this book for anyone who appreciates natural beauty. My Mother and girlfriend were first on my list and just as impressed.

Doubilet has produced his most wonderful portrait to date of marine life beneath the waves. A rich tapestry of images and fantastic colours make this book the perfect 'coffee table' accompaniment. Doubilet is particularly skillful at focussing on his individual subjects and really bringing them to life. As Cousteau once said,'The civilised world as we know it ends as soon as one puts his head beneath the water.' This book serves as a fascinating insight for all those interested in the amazing creatures that inhabit our oceans, and for those of us that have already experienced this wonder, it serves to remind us that we all have a responsibility to protect these special places.

This huge, beautiful book contains many marvellous views of maritime landscapes above & below the water. I was attracted to Doubilet's work by an article in National Geographic & the lovely pictures in there did not lead to any disappointment in the quality of the book, I know it's not cheap but it is an investment in an excellent collection of beautiful images

Doubilet has used many subtle but effective techniques in his photography that perfectly compliment his subjects. He has a skill of making the subject the focus and the background complimentary which many aquaphotographers find hard given the nature of there buisness. A highly recomended book to everyone who has an apreciation for art, diving and nature. This book is by far the best underwater collection to date.

Water light time is my all time favourite photography book, it has to be seen to be believed. Every single picture in this book is outstanding from underwater seascapes to intimate portraits of most living creatures under the sea. My partictular favourites include baby turtles and a stunning collection of black and white images of manta ray taken at night. If you love the sea and photography I would whole heartedly recommend this book, it has completely inspired me in every way.
