I bought this water cannon to ward off a territorial threat to the realm of our beloved cat, Pepper, from two hostile moggies. This item is correctly described as a water cannon rather than a water pistol based on both size and output. It is simply but substantially made from tough plastics and looks as though it will stand a lot of hard use/abuse. I think the most realistic analogy is to compare it both in operation and construction to an oversized bicycle tyre pump. It looks like it means business!

You fill the cannon by pulling out the plunger and sucking up water into it - it does not have a discrete reservoir - the barrel is, in effect, the reservoir. It is harder to store whilst full of water, as, unless you keep it upright the water is inclined to drain out of the nozzle - it seems designed to fill and fire on demand. The amount of "fire" you get out of a fill depends on how forcefully you push the plunger in when firing - you determine the pressure and duration of the shot, and, therefore, how long a fill lasts. I would suggest however, a fill will only last two or three strong shots at most. The range is impressive providing you have the strength to ram the plunger in hard, and, I think I've managed about 40 feet, although, up to 60 feet is claimed to be possible. The result is also inclined to be a burst rather than continuous stream of water albeit of considerable volume - it will soak the opposition if you hit them.

This is not really a toy (even though Amazon classify it as such) and it is suited to teenagers (recommended for 14 upwards on the pack) and adults. Apart from any danger from misuse, I don't think a child would have the strength to operate this cannon effectively. It is certainly great fun to use with a long range and considerable "soaking" power.

We chose not to have cats but, it would appear, they chose us or, rather, our garden! Last year, they raided our bird boxes of eggs and young. Needless to say, we don't have any nesting birds this year! The cats dig up our plants, even in containers, and use the fresh soil as toilets! We have tried all the very humane ways to discourage them, including the sensors, lion pooh and even putting barbed wire around the nesting boxes - all to no avail. Well, enough is enough - we decided to raise the game. We got back from holiday last night and the water cannon was waiting for us.

This morning, one of the neighbours three cats was leisurely cleaning herself and sunbathing in the garden - totally unconcerned by our presence. My husband stalked his target - she stood her ground unconcerned, knowing she could run for it at the last minute thwarting any kind of retribution! Well - things were very different this time - he didn't need to get too close! He took aim and pushed the plunger. A strong stream of water shot from the gun and was bang on target. Success - first time. Her exit over the garden fence was satisfyingly rapid having received a good soaking and, I suspect, a bit of a shock! The nice thing about this method of control is that the cats are not harmed. However, using a cognitive/behavioural approach (entering our garden brings about an unpleasent soaking) we hope to reduce their attraction to our domain for toiletting and garden wrecking purposes! One success and we are feeling much more confident that we can achieve this! Fantastic product - husband loves it already!

This was bought because I have neighbours with cats, and the cats all think my garden is their toilet, Well not any more Pussy! War has been declared, and the first time it was used i discovered that cats can clear a 6 foot panelled fence from a resting position in one bound while making a strange noise. That said, the cat has not returned . If it does the jet of water will meet it again.

Having read the reviews, and having suffered for years from cats hunting birds and making their mess in my garden, I purchased this as a cat deterrent about a month ago. What can I say? It works very well for me: most cats only needed one squirt from this cannon to get the message that they are not wanted and 99% of them have stayed away; only a few have required extra encouragement. I just have the one or two canny ones to deal with: those that now turn up when there is no-one at home, or arrive in the early hours before I am up and about. In order to deal with those I have purchased the RSPB recommended Catwatch ultrasonic deterrent which is currently guarding the main bird feeding area with some success.

I agree with other reviewers that the range is not as good as claimed by the manufacturer. However, my gardens are not too deep and I have found that I can easily reach over the first 30-40 feet from an upstairs window. (Not sure what my neighbours think I am doing, though!)

It does dribble water from the exhaust hole when filled, but holding a thumb over the end while transporting the cannon and aiming isn't too much of an issue.

The item came with a sticky lubricant (Vaseline?) on the mechanism, and unlike some reviewers, I have had no problems with the item jamming. Just need to remember to completely empty it after use.

Tip: When on cat watch, keep a bucket of water ready to load and fire and, if possible, keep a suitable window open so that the cat's aren't warned before you fire.

I recommend this for those wanting a pro-active cat deterrent, and one that does no harm to a cat other than scaring it off the premises.
