“You’re a wonderful man with a beautiful soul and my life is so much better with you in it,” Lennon’s soothing words smooth my ragged edges.”
This is not a sweet normal romance story- Ryker and Lennon’s story has some darkness, sadness, twisty moments but even in the darkness there is a sunshine that will push through. A true love of two people who are not seen as normal in society’s standards but who will show you that true, raw, beautiful love exists - it isn’t easy but it is worth it.
“Lennon is different, she always has been, she sees me, just like I always wished she would. Someone is finally giving me a chance and I’m so f****** grateful that person is her.”
Ryker and Lennon were both beautiful people. Two characters that you will easily fall in love with. Both have had such horrible experiences and my heart broke for them but it was built back to being whole as I read their love story. Ryker’s anxiety and the little faith he has in himself was hard to read sometimes but as the story develops so does Ryker and he gains strength from Lennon and her sunshine in his life. Lennon also grows throughout the story. She also gains strength from Ryker and she gets stronger and more determined to stand up for herself which is a great thing to witness.
“His romantic messages have kept me floating in bliss and I want to know what else he’s capable of. I want to see it all, hear his words, and hopefully Seek will let me.”
This is a unique love story, different from anything you will read. I don’t want to give much away, but you will know from the synopsis that this isn’t a simple straight forward love story. The differences in this story will keep you hooked and will keep you cheering and wishing harder than any couple before that these two make it and get their HEA. It’s not an easy ride for these two; the battles and demons they face in their life and in getting to know each other and trust each other is a struggle, but nothing worth fighting for comes easy.
The blurb made me think I was getting a twisty, darker read and I did get this vibe for the first chapter or so. However once the hero and heroine got together it turned into a very sugary sweet romance full of hearts, flowers and unicorns. This left me very disappointed in the book as it wasn't the story that the blurb suggested.
Despite his stalkerish tendencies and his interference in Lennon's life I really liked Ryker. His every motivation was to protect and care for her but not in a controlling way. He really struggled with social skills and situations - I'm not sure if the author was hinting at autism but this was left 'in the air'. I loved the chapters from his point of view.
Lennon was very immature and naive and at times it did irritate me. Too often she sounded like a pre-teen on hallucinogenics. However this is a new adult books so at least some of her behaviour fitted in with her age and experience, although the more she spoke the worse it got. Since this is the first book I've read by this author I'm giving the benefit of the doubt, and as a result not lowering my rating in this instance.
Technically the writing is good, I found it easy to follow the story, knew who was talking etc. The dialogue felt natural, despite Lennon often sounding like a cross between Mary Poppins and Shirley Temple. The pace was good and the connection between Lennon and Ryker was believable. I'm just not a fan of many new adult books, which this most definitely is. Had the blurb or description made this clear I would probably have avoided this book as a result. That combined with the incredibly childish Lennon have me struggling on a rating, I just really could not connect with her.
Lennon…what a beautiful, emotionally sensitive young woman, I could fully understand why Ryker felt the way he did towards her, her naivety and naturally shy demeanour were not just delightful but also the things that made her vulnerable and from practically the first time the met the connection that existed between them had only one place to go…up!
They were engaging, no in fact I don’t think that actually does them justice, they were captivating. I found that I couldn’t wait to read what happened next, I desperately wanted to spend time with the two of them watching and listening to how they grew.
As they opened up and they began to understand not only themselves but what they meant to each other, I could have applauded the growth that they both showed, the fact that with Ryker by her side Lennon found her inner strength, the fortitude almost to be the woman that had been hidden inside for so long, the woman that refused to just be walked over anymore and the woman that her parents had held her back from being…emotionally free she was capable of greatness.
A great read, an emotional read, a fantastically well written story that I have no doubt I will revisit again very, very soon.
