Brilliant. A real page turner, and such an easy way to learn a bit of fascinating local history. I love the lead as a character for his skill and talent. He gives a great view into medieval politics. I liked the way Hodkinson is kind enough to remind us simple readers of who the characters are as we progress. There are a lot of them, moving in and out and he frequently drops in a line on who they are. The character list was useful at the start too. It twists and turns nicely, keeping me turning pages, wanting to know what happens next.
I loved the first adventure and look forward to many more...Hodkinson is a talented guy. I enjoyed this more than my John Grisham on holiday!

Richard Savage is back. The former Templar knight is now a farmer in France, that is until he is compelled to take on a mission back in Ireland. An Ireland that is undergoing a power struggle between the Scots, who have taken control of the north under the command of Edward Bruce and who seek to subdue the whole island and the English. However, they have a problem in Ulster as Castle Carrickfergus is somehow surviving a siege and a famine.

I was riveted to the pages as the author has produced a book at full throttle. The action is relentless, the politics are insidious and the main characters, both the villains and the good guys and girls, are portrayed in a most entertaining fashion. Emotions run high, hardships are endured and intrepid resourcefulness are the order of the day as the story winds it way through a few surprising turns of events. It is indeed a most enjoyable read and what's even better is that this isn't the end of Richard's involvement in the battles between the English King Edward and the Bruce brothers, Robert and Edward. I am looking forward to the sequel. 5 stars.

Another good yarn from this educated writer. He relates this period using the Anglo-Irish/Scots triad very well interwoven with Templar and throne grabbing historical references. Very well researched and a nice continuation of the Savage story.

Just finished and really enjoyed the further adventures of the Savages. The story moved along at a good pace with plenty of action and intrigue to keep the reader engrossed. An all round excellent book I would heartily recommend . I look forward to the family's further adventures. Something tells me that Richard won't find the quiet life he craves for a while yet.

Sir Richard Savage's adventures continue along with the plight of his family. Battles, Politics and betrayals ensue to make an enjoyable light read. Poor editing and constant reminders of previous events in told in the series pulls the book down a little.
Nevertheless, I look forward reading the next book in the series.
