This is it, this is where is all started! Released in 1984 this album was the major league metal of it's time! We were introduced to a musical genius and rock god in Blackie Lawless complete with buzz saw blades, blood spitting raw meat and feathers! The tunes are actually, these days, somewhat dated but hey, it's 20 years old! This album does contain songs that have become classic WASP anthems such as I Wanna Be Somebody which has actually gone on to appear on more live and best of albums than I can count. Listening to this album is very nostalgic for me and reminds me of my School Daze when I thought Blackie Lawless truly was my god.

The album itself, with 3 extra nonalbum tracks are great, but is this remastered? The opening track, animal, sounds like played on a mono music cassetplayer from the early 80s. i manna be somebody and the rest of the original wasp album sound a little better but nothing you would exspect from a remasterd release. So dont waste money on this release if you are looking for improved sound quality.

What can I add that hasn't already been said. This is hardly a raw debut. Blackie Lawless' vocals can skin a cactus from across the street but the music, heavy though it is, is well-structured and excellently produced for a first time effort. The infamous 'Animal...' is a shock-rock classic. As is 'I Wanna Be Somebody'. My first experience of this track was on vinyl shortly after it was released (before CDs!!!)and it was the first track on the album. And it raised the hairs on the back of my neck. Still does. 'Love Machine' follows suit as another classic. Very catchy. 'BAD' is great, following the verse/chorus formula but better than most. It's just no-nonsense good old rock and roll with a dirty heart. 'The Flame' is almost anthemic and could almost be covered as a folk song. 'School Daze' is kind of a 'School's Out'-lite. It's a lot of fun. 'Hellion' is back to the dirty, satanic WASP. A kind-of classic; very powerful.

'Sleeping...' is a classic - full stop. A ballad that twists into another dark area. Beautiful and ugly all at the same time. 'On Your Knees' is a great, catchy, inimitably WASP track. 'Tormentor' is good but holds none of the sparkle and grit of what precedes it. The last track on the first release, 'The Torture Never Stops' is a great little closer. Apt and good without being excellent. Extra track, 'Show No Mercy' is very good and does fit with the rest but is sadly no classic. And the cover of the Stones' 'Paint It Black' is just that - a cover. Very brave of them and full marks for adding a WASP twist but ultimately an act of futility.

However, if you are an avid absorber of all thing rock and/or metal this is an essential purchase.

Although the album does now feature the excellent 'Animal (F**k like a beast)' there is far more to this band than just this. The music here is both melodic and heavy in a Judas Priest meets glam-metal style, and the songs are perfectly constructed, hugely anthemic and never outstay their welcome, coming in at sub-four minutes. The raw, evil-sounding vocals are perfect for the lyrics and overall sound, which is pure demonic rock n roll metal. My personal choices form the disc would be 'Animal'. 'I wanna be somebody', 'Love Machine' and 'Sleeping in the fire'. In conclusion, if you like great, raw, classic sounding metal with a sense of humour and fun, buy this.

this is w.a.s.p. this is the raw sound of wanting the fame and glory and knowing they had the sound ,the talent and the songs to take it. all the way from school daze teen rebellion to the deep and moody sleeping in the fire its a tour de force of metal done viciously right. i would have bought this album for hellion alone ! buy it, get it in your music collection in the space where you should have a classic metal album !

One of the best debut 'metal' albums of 1980s and WASP were famously one of the last big money signings from the LA Strip scene of that era. The inverted commas over 'metal' are really just to indicate that they demonstrate so much more variety, skill and imagination than the genre and era might suggest. The difference in styles between the two guitarists is inspiring and sadly was not to last.

this is wasps debut released in 1984,and quite possibly wasps finest moment, they had the sleazy rock n roll riffs that guns n roses would bring to the table a few years later so their influence is paramount, they had the killer anthems and the ability to write an infectious song that didnt take itself too seriously, all in all a fun album.

classics like i wanna be somebody, animal, love machine, sleeping in the fire and school daze are all found here among many others, wasp were a band that from the start courted controversy and had politicians and church ministers in frantic fear and for those who find that cool, well this is the album you need,i would be lying if i said wasp are a band that are flawless, but here you have an album that serves its purpose and like i said is influential,oh you want more proof of that,ok ,let me see!ah yes, sleeping in the fire was covered by tiamat, hellion was covered by children of bodom, and i wanna be somebody was covered by sentenced,so all in all you need this, trust me you really do
