When I have travelled to the US before, I have walked past a few shops that sold cap washers, but they are rather bulky and would be a nightmare to try and get home, so I've never bothered.
Then whilst browsing recently I discovered they were now available here in the UK and more importantly on Amazon...so next day free delivery cut out the issue of delivery costs on a bulky odd shaped item.
So it's how here and as I already know it's basically a plastic frame that holds a baseball cap in shape and then allows you to clean it properly in your DISHWASHER...yes I did say dishwasher..The multiple jets at the bottom and top along with the hot water and detergent will clean your cap from below and above and more importantly it will keep things nicely in shape. Trying to put a baseball cap in the wash (which I have mistakenly tried before) will just result in the brim ending up misshapen or ruined totally as they are often just cardboard inside.
The framework will keep the keep the part that goes over your head in shape during the cleaning process and it will also keep the brim in one piece too. I know in America (and here of course) some like to wear the peaks completely flat but I personally have mine quite rounded, so in order to get it fitting properly, you have to flatten your peak a bit to get it to fit in the cage correctly. this will probably help to keep the cardboard (if yours has cardboard) in better shape too. It would then just be a case of rolling it back to your personal requirements afterwards.
IM yet to try this in my dishwasher as it's always filled with plates from my growing family...but the next time it finishes cleaning I'll empty it super fast (which will keep the wife happy) and then get my first cap in it (I have the perfect one that is grubby as hell from my sweaty brow over months and years of wear). From videos I have seen on the web, it is going to do a great job.
I should state, the piece of card it comes mounted on states you can indeed use this in your washing machine...but personally, I wouldn't want to take a chance. In my opinion, either the CapWash product would get damaged during the wash cycle or worst case scenario, it would actually damage the washing machine itself.
Either way, it's great I can now give my caps a thorough wash with worry about damaging the brim or shrinking the hat.
A great purchase and far simpler than bringing one back in a suitcase
You put your cap into the frame and it clips down. Put it in on a cold wash, or in the dishwasher and you let it dry naturally. As you can see, it also puts the shape back into old caps as well.
I just wish I had it before I threw away loads of my old hats.
