This book is an excellent look into all that took place on
the home front during the war years, it includes recipes and
real life memories from people who were present in the war.
It is a fantastic read and well worth the effort to find it.
This book was purchased through amazon from Brynlyn who gave
an excellent service, speedy and efficient.

The book, by Jennifer Davies, follows on from her 'victorian' series which appear in book form and run in tandem with the release of the TV series in DVD format. As others have stated the book is excellent in its own right and I wholeheartedly recommend it. I have contacted the BBC regarding releasing the series on DVD and whilst they have no immediate plans to do so, they will review the situation if they receive sufficient requests to do so from the public. That would be marvellous.

If you missed this the first time around, it has been repeated on the Sky Garden Channel, and what a fabulous series it still is. Not yet available on DVD, or, in its day, on VHS; and I wondered why? But this book has everything you could possibly need other than having the pleasure of watching it on the TV screen. The recipes, the period adverts and the background information on the unfortunate War makes for an excellent read, or companion, should it ever be released.
Profusely illustrated with many photos from the time, along with stills featuring the characters from the series, with a great many in colour, this is a fabulous book which I am proud to own. Well, what can you expect? It was a BBC series, and this is a BBC book, and you can't get much better than that!

I have looked for the dvd of this BBC television production without success but was fortunate enough to record the entire series on my V+ box. It was by pure chance I stumbled upon this book and am grateful to Amazon for their search facility that I did so. The book expands on the themes covered in the series but would stand up as a good read even if you hadn't seen the series. I have tried some of the recipes with very mixed results, it is better to try them on an empty stomach and an open mind. Paradise Pudding is a particular favourite, others less so. The background to the creation of home grown food and the history of the Land Army was covered very well. Jennfer Davies has covered the subject with very best the BBC professionalism expected.

This book is valuable not only for its historical commentary but brings together the knowledge of Ruth Mott and Head Gardner, Harry Dodson for one last time (Harry Sadly passed away in 2005, Ruth is still going strong).

The Second world war was a time in British history we we all puuled and suffered together. During Rationing there were great innovations in thrift and cookery that are as pertainent today, as they were then.

A few more recipes would have been nice and it would also be nice to see the Wartime Kitchen Garden Series on DVD

My wife rates this recipe book highly and I have witnessed how tasty the food was whe ingredients we now take for granted were in such short supply during those dark days of WW2.
