Top Customer Reviews

Conway’s are a leading British publisher of maritime subjects and internationally recognised for the quality of the works they produce. It says much for this particular series that there are many devotees who can’t wait for the next edition and, once again, are not likely to be disappointed. That said, the brief title ‘Warship 2014’ may give the impression of only the latest ships and technology being included. Not so! My own particular area of interest stems from shipwrecks and requires me to study historic vessels of all types and I found a great deal of interest here.

Whereas those vessels that never got beyond the drawing board, rarely grab my attention, the splendid account of the Royal Navy aircraft carrier cancelled in 1966 was particularly fascinating. Other features include; Amiral Charner class cruisers, German battleships Braunschweig & Deutschland, the Japanese armoured cruisers which fought at Tsushima, the new Italian aircraft carrier Cavour, Admiral Lazarev & Admiral Spiridov class frigates, the IJN light carrier Ryûjô, Post-WW2 fire control in the Royal Navy and the incredible story of the escape from St. Nazaire during WW2 of the incomplete French battleship Jean Bart. The work then concludes with ‘Warship Notes’ (a selection of short articles), Book reviews and Warship Gallery - with the latter being an amazing series of photographs depicting the building of the French battleship Liberté (laid down 1903, completed 1908) at St Nazaire.

Clearly, therefore, this book has something for everyone but there is also another dimension which sets it apart from anything else. Each of the contributing authors is an acknowledged expert in his own right - with many, if not all, having several publications to their own name.
