About the Author
KATE LUARD (1872-1962) having trained as a professional nurse in the 1890s served in both the Second Boer War and the First World War, working in casualty clearing stations and on hospital trains. Her letters were for her family but they soon reached a far wider audience. Two of Kate s brothers were colonels in the Royal Marines, serving respectively in Gallipoli and Palestine, her letters were sent on to them. Kate resigned in 1918 to look after her ailing father.
