If, like me, you shy away from complex reads, this book is for you. It is written with a good pace and every chapter left me wanting more.
Hiowever, that little paragraph in the blurb which mentioned WOmEN as well as men, relationships and wars effect on them all, made me think I would give it a go, as I had read all my other 'to be read' books and had nothing to lose.
I am so glad I did read it!
It was well written and fast paced, thank goodness u didn't have to read long winded accounts of tanks or something!
I loved Lofty and Emma, as well as Yusef and Fatima. I was intrigued by the different ways they responded to the situations they found themselves in.
It humanised this 'terrorist' war far more than anything else ever could.
The characters were three dimensional and believable. They took on their own lives and personalities, to such an extent that I think the ones who survived are still living out their adventures away from the page.
I believe there is to be a sequel...I can't wait.
The is a book I fully recommend
GIRLS:....THIS ISNT YOU NORMAL BORING WAR BOOK...ITS A BRILLIANT TALE.
Lofty and Emma are a young newly married couple who are both trying to find that balance between army life and what is considered normal. Youssef and Fatima are committed to each other but having to abide by their families rules. The plot line takes these characters out of their normal situations and throws them into extreme conflict both on the battle lines and back at home.
The characters were very real. I liked the way that each of them fleetingly touched each other’s lives but impacted massively in the end.
I found this book gripping! That brief experience of conflict, even within the words of the book, is powerful and impacting to the lay person.
I could see the end of the book approaching on my reader but didn't know how you were going to wrap it up in so few pages, it could have benefited from a little expansion into how the characters managed to resume their own version of normality.
Very good and I would definitely like to see more.
Very well composed, this book really transports the reader into the world of radicalisation, military life and the war against insurgency.
Loved the way the story stayed apace of all it's major players, informative and thrilling at the same time.
Four stars awarded instead of five, as I felt frustrated with the ending - totally implausible that both the protagonists would be in the same location. For me the book ended too abruptly; leaving me thinking the author had reached the word count and unable to finish.
However; definitely a MUST READ!!
