WARHAMMER 40000: DAWN OF WAR 2 STEEL EDITION PC
Amazon.co.uk Review
Dawn of War II ushers in a new chapter in the acclaimed RTS series - taking players to the brutal frontlines of war to lead an elite strike force on a mission to save the galaxy.
It's the 41st Millennium in the Sub-Sector Aurelia - a cluster of worlds on the edge of the Galaxy - where a battle of epic proportions is about to commence. Ancient races will clash across the planets that dot this section of space, battling for the greatest of stakes - not only the claim to the land and its bounty - but the fate of each race.
With a focus on fast-action RTS gameplay, Dawn of War II brings to life the science fiction universe of Warhammer 40,000 like never before. Experience the intimate brutality of battle as you play through your chosen race's epic campaign. Clash with enemies on battlefields ablaze with visceral melee and ranged combat. Lead and develop your squads from raw recruits into the most battle hardened veterans in the Galaxy.

I recommend this game for anyone who is bored of the same old RTS spiel, and would like something fresh.
Also... Dreadnoughts for the win!!!
The multiplayer component, however, maintains a striking similarity to that of the original. The graphics are a major improvement, and the addition of proper physics and garrisonable buildings as well as the streamlined play experience (no more construction of bases) make it a much sweeter experience than that of the original.
I'd recommend this to strategy fans AND fans of the action-rpg genre, as well as general sci-fi fans (dawn of war 2 is probably the best treatment of the warhammer 40,000 universe and history i've seen in a game, making it an easy contender with other sci-fi heavyweights for what is in my opinion the first time).
Campaign gameplay is brilliant. DoW 2 combines a linear storyline (like in DoW) with world dommination style mission selection (like Soulstorm) and does it really well. I could only improve it by having a longer campaign and more available maps. The campaign doesn't give you full squads, only small 3 or 4 man squads where you choose the loadout of the sergeant or sometimes the whole squad. This fits really well with 40K background in many ways and makes sense in the storyline as well. You only get one of each of the main squad types and this combined with Company of Heros style movement, cover, terrain, weapons etc means the player has to really think; a rare and precious thing in recent games. My only real complaint would be how easy it is to clear a whole squad from a building with an explosion, rather than just killing a few members each time like in CoH. Computer AI is clever and tactics vary between the races which is a nice improvement on DoW. Same can't really be said for missions. Admittedly, there is sometimes a bonus objective like rescuing gaurdsmen or capturing generators, but these are few and far between. Most are either unlimited time missions where you simply have to cross the map and kill a boss or missions you get a limited amout of campaign days to attempt where you defend a point you have already captured from enemy incursion. Some more variation might be nice, but wargear loadouts and squad selection mean each mission can be played several very different ways.
Multiplayer was disappointing in my oppinion. Squads in multiplayer were even smaller. I didn't like the squad size, the lack of varied upgrade choices or the extremely low population cap. Terrain works very well, but tends to get completely destroyed too quickly. I personally think they went too far with cutting down on base building. Some construction should still have been possible aside from generators. Even always being able to build turrets and teleport beacons would be nice. Using generals as construction units didn't work for me either and bases are too hard to kill-especially since they are always grouped together, allowing for easy combined defence. I suppose they have to be given that you can't build anything, but I'd prefer more building and destroying to the alternative. Finally, the interface isn't very nice in multiplayer either so I can only really credit the graphics, squad AI and elimination of rushing as a decent tactic.
To sum up, the game's more than worth it for an amazing campaign, but don't go into it expecting good things from the multiplayer part.
All in all this is very AVERAGE which is disappointing when it is from a stable of great games. I now have my money back from THQ since they do not declare the need for internet connection to play and I await the new Space Marine game with trepidation.
My View, don't bother unless you are easily pleased and really do get 8meg download!
Sam
