Wargame can be really challenging. In fact, I can't remember having being so challenged by a rts strategy game. But, it is fun too and very satisfying. There is an incredible amount of detail, but you can engage with this detail as much or little as you want.
The players can choose between a couple of hundred types of vehicles, infantry and helicopters of the cold war era (ca.1970-85) to engage on vast, visually convincing rural maps.
The campaigns are nice but endless fun is the multiplayer (up to 4v4) :
The player has to combine a limited amount of either NATO or Warsaw Pact unit types in so called decks. Before battle he can choose only one deck (i.e. combination of units) to buy units from during the respective battle.
Orders are given to units that consist of a max. of 4 vehicles and these can be split up. Though there is a certain rock-paper-scissors element concerning the matching of the unit types (e.g. anti-air wins vs helis and tanks vs infantry in the open), the quality of the chosen equipment also plays an important role (e.g. whether to choose cheap T-55 or expensive T-80 tanks) as far as range, rate of fire and armour is concerned.
It takes a while to optimize the combination of vehicles in a deck but the fun starts long before - whenever you zoom in to watch the action unfolding on the map...
Players either win by points gained from eliminating enemy units or by killing all command units, which are also necessary to occupy specific zones on the map that produce money to buy more units in the course of the game. Some zones are also of importance since they allow to bring in reinforcements on various parts of the map.
The game has a very realistic air: Reconnaissance and supply play an important role. Also, the size of the map requires to make thorough tactical decisions where to send units to, given that it takes a while to get them there.Read more ›
Single player review.
Wargame EE is a real time strategy game that will have passed under the radar of most gamer's with it being a non-mainstream title, lacking the advertising chops of the RTS big boys publishers, it has to rely a lot on word of mouth recommendations. The Developers of this title, Eugen Systems, are the team behind the awsome WW2 RTS game R.U.S.E, and here they have set the game 30 years on-wards using modern World in Conflict-esque combat units. Set in the 1970's - 1980's in the Cold War era, over 22 missions you get to play with the arsenal of the nations at that time, across Europe in various scenarios. As you achieve primary & secondary goals for command stars, you can use these stars to unlock the 350 various land or air unit types when on mission. Each unit has various deployment point costs, are a limited pool in number(when they die that's it) & each mission limits you to certain starting DP which gradually rise as you take control & hold key sectors.
+ 22 missions.
+ Complex & deep gameplay.
+ Varied unit types to master & combine.
+ Visually fantastic (Satellite view with unit counters on a board or zoom down to units to admire the detail on them)
+ Good sound brings the battles to life.
+ The UI is easy to use (albeit not visually stunning).
+ Challenging AI.
- No pause & deploy or drag & face unit option.
- Maps lack variety.Read more ›
Challenging game play, lots to think about.
Be warned, this is war! From the very first mission you will encounter difficulty and frustration. But you will see Leopard 1 tanks race into battle with T-62's, Abrams tanks duking it out with T-80s and all in superb detail.
This disk will more than likely contain the Steam activation code but if you are willing to put up with Steam, you will NOT be disappointed. Already there is a sequel planned for 2013 which will include more than the eight nations that are already present (Britain, France, West Germany, US, USSR, Czech Republic, Poland and East Germany)and the sequel will also make jet aircraft available for the first time. Add that to the always available on-line action and this game is a winner.
