Product description

Product Description

John Carpenter's The Ward, a psychological thriller about a young woman locked in a mysterious mental institution in the 1960s, marks iconic horror master John Carpenter's first feature film in over seven years.

Kristen (Amber Heard), a beautiful but troubled young woman, finds herself bruised, cut, drugged, and held against her will in a remote ward of a psychiatric hospital. She is completely disoriented, with no idea why she was brought to this place and no memory of her life before being admitted. All she knows is that she isn't safe.

The other patients in the ward--four equally disturbed young women--offer no answers, and Kristen quickly realizes things are not as they seem. The air is heavy with secrets, and at night, when the hospital is dark and foreboding, she hears strange and frightening sounds. It appears they are not alone.

One-by-one, the other girls begin to disappear and Kristen must find a way out of this hellish place before she, too, becomes a victim. As she struggles to escape, she will uncover a truth far more dangerous and horrifying than anyone could have imagined.

It's always great to see John Carpenter back behind the camera - though sadly there's been nothing more from him since 2010, when this film was released. This is, in many ways, a very run-of-the-mill set up with jump scares where you pretty much guess they'll be and a denouement that isn't original - or even very surprising. And yet, it's a very enjoyable and entertaining movie mainly because it's so obviously directed by a master filmmaker. The film looks great, for a start, and the editing and mise-en-scene are ample evidence of Carpenter's skill as a storyteller - even though the story's not that hot. It also shows his skill with actors - there are some very good performances from the predominantly female main cast and the much underrated Jared Harris. There's a wonderfully atmospheric score too, though not composed by Carpenter himself. Yes, "The Ward" is corny and clunky in parts but this is transcended by the skill in which it is undertaken. Mind you, I really enjoyed "Ghosts of Mars" too so make of the above what you will, though I like most of his movies, with the exception of the awful remake of "Village of the Damned" - my favourites being "Dark Star", "Assault on Precinct 13", "The Thing", "Starman" and "In The Mouth of Madness". As a huge Carpenter fan, I can only hope that the man gets to work on a new project soon, preferably with strong material and Kurt Russell starring! One can dream but, for the time being, you could do worse than give "The Ward" a watch - at the very least, it shows how a cinematic alchemist can turn very base metal into, if not gold, then certainly into something of solid entertainment value.

I was unsure whether I'd like it when I bought this. I'm so glad I did. It gave me a few jumps and had enough violence without being OTT - to me, a lot of gratuitous gore is boring. It also had a surprisingly good story line and for someone who usually sees the ending not long after a film starts, this one kept me guessing to a surprise ending. If you're a purely splatter fan give this a miss, but if you like something thoughtful with a bit of a scare do go for it. Amber Heard gives her usual good performance and I ended up liking what should have been an un-likeable character.
