I actually think this is head and shoulders above the recent remake. Admittedly the remake portrayed some of the book details that were missing from this early film, but they made SO many stupid, pathetic choices in this remake. Like the passenger plane that is shot out of the sky... how come it takes an entire night for it to crash, and how come they fall asleep during the incident??? Just plain madness! So many more mad things with the remake which I will not go into here. Just to say, I can watch the original from beginning to end and enjoy every moment. They did an amazing job back then.

Had to wait nearly 2 months for delivery due to Covid pandemic was well worth the wait. The fine staff at smoke screen kept me upto date and reassured me it would arrive many thanks to them. The film itself as never looked so amazing with crystal clear image and a fantastic 5.1 remasterd soundtrack. My copy also came with the limited edition slipover which I was very happy with limited to 1500 copies. Also this version is region B so importing to the UK it will work fine on your player as this film is not available here at this time.

Much better than the Tom Cruise remake. It is very clearly the blueprint for Independence Day (I have just watched them back to back). It is also the starting point of the 2 season TV series WOTW which launched Adrian Paul (later in Highlander). Both these are great reasons to watch it. The atmosphere is always extremely creepy in the TV series, but this film showed precious little of the creepy aliens so the mystery level is very high. The panic in the city streets is well depicted and foreshadows almost identical scenes in Independence Day and the Walking Dead. Ultimately it is a parable of human colonialism, made palatable by the use of imagined aliens doing it to humans.

This was one film I had seen on TV on a good few occasions and was desperate to find a copy of on DVD. So imagine my delight when I was told by a friend online that it was available on Amazon! I'm a lover of all things sci-fi so once I knew I could buy it here, I just had to have it.
As a production - and bearing in mind that this was made in the early 1950s - it stands up very well indeed. The effects are way ahead of their time and the tension builds right from the first opening scene, and the narrative at the start gives the viewer a taste of what is to come in the next 80 minutes. The screenplay stays more or less faithful to the book itself, and the realisation of the alien machines - here they are seen to fly instead of walk - is excellent. On the acting front Gene Barry takes all the credit with his portrayal of scientist Clayton Forrester, and it's his role that is central to the plot and carries the film along.
If there is one slight flaw with the film, it may be that it is just a tad too short - personally I'd have liked it have been a bit longer than 80 minutes so that the plot could have developed further, and because I love it so much! Buy it and see for yourself how sci-fi at the cinema looked before the advent of Star Wars and other popular favourites such as Star Trek and Independence Day, and you'll be hooked.

To the modern eye, the 1954 original of War of the Worlds must conjure up ideas of shaky not-so-special effects and creaking dialogue. Well thankfully, that's simply not the case here.
Without researching the background of the movie further, I suspect the creators of the movie understood the limitations of the special effects and instead produced something that is truly remarkable.
To the modern eye, between the excellent, purposeful and judicious use of special effects and the dialogue, War of the Worlds holds its own, and then some.
Emerging on the back of Cold War tensions of the era, this film was probably much more "real" in its depiction of abandoned city streets and the wavering hand over the button to deploy the atom bomb.
War of the Worlds is a thought experiment of how we humans would deal with an aggressive, hostile alien species, and not some slam, bang, crash cinema seat filling science fiction action thriller.
Yes, they took liberties with the original designs for the alien vessels, but even that was a very clever idea -- using some kind of anti-gravity beam as the three "legs" instead of the tendril-like limbs we're more familiar with.
Spielberg came close in 2005 with hi version, but the view point was more personal and less cerebral, and it's this latter perspective, which for me at least, is what makes the 1954 original so remarkable.
All in all, the original War of the Worlds is a blazing, shining example of how excellent films older than your parents can be.

Forget yer Independence Day and the remake, this is the original and maybe over 60 years old now, watching this at night with the lights off will take you to another planet?.The priest scene and the arm scene are classics, plus the very brief glimpse of one of the alien crew still holds up in todays special effects,if not,better.Story.Ships,three at a time land on earth and the aliens are intent of destroying and taking over the earth and no man or woman will get in their way.In glorious colour and brilliant sound effects make this a classic forever!Youll never look at the skies quite the same again?

A brilliant early sci-fi movie created long before today's digital effects. And with the added bonus that there's no sign of Tom Cruise ;) in some respects this is better than the remake.
