Author Linell Jeppsen takes the reader on a wonderful journey into magical fantasy in her latest novel, The War of Odds.

Although this is way outside my usual reading genre, I loved this story with its combination of humans, witches, fairies, elves, sprites, trolls and other creatures of the universe. It is a spellbinding tale that totally captivates the reader in this truly enchanting story.

It is the story of 16-year-old Sara Giddings who is forced to deal with life's tragedies after the death of her mother. She relocates with her father to a tiny community in Washington, which overlaps the land of the fae. Here, a young sprite named Pollo discovers that Sara is not a typical teenager, but a witch with immense, untapped power- the power to heal.

There are some wonderful characters in this novel, including Pollo, a cat named Hissaphat, and the wood nymph, Muriel who convince Sara that her powers may be the only key to healing what ails the fae, and Timaron, king of the Unseelie court.

This is a fantastic story of good versus evil, love, adventure, magic and the value of true friendship. An excellent Young Adult novel, but adults will love it too.

I have read several of Ms. Jeppsen's other books, but this is the first YA fantasy, so it's definitely different. Sara Giddings is motherless and moves with her father to a new town, where she stumbles into the land of the fae. The faerie world quickly recognizes she is a witch with psychic healing powers, and recruits her and two friends to help heal Timaron, the king of the fantasy world, who has declared war upon humans. The journey to the king's court is fraught with dangers - powerful dark magic, and a host of evil demons and monsters lying in wait to prevent her passage.

This story reminds me of some of the Hans Christian Andersen tales - very dark and with lots of death, despair, tragedy, and sadness. I thought it moved a little too quickly at times, and some scenes were not given enough weight to allow the horror to register sufficiently. And perhaps this is needed to keep the younger readers from becoming overwhelmed.

Overall, another fine foray into fiction for Ms. Jeppsen. Not my favorite, but still a wonderful read, and well worth your time, especially if you like fairy tale fantasies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent story by Linell Jeppsen 24 Jan. 2016

I enjoy Onio's recurrence in this book. I love how the books are interconnected while also being able to stand alone. Linell creates extremely memorable characters that are easy to connect with despite many of them being non human creatures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful family and YA adventure 20 July 2013
By T. Jackson King - Published on Amazon.com

This tale of a hidden fairie land co-existing with the mundane world as disaster strikes both lands is a wonderful, deeply felt story of a young woman's learning of her psychic healing gifts and using them in ways to help save both the magical Seelie world and the human mundane world. I loved the nature of Sara, who lost her white witch mother to a DWI, who faces a new school, new home and new challenges in the mountains of Washington state. The fairy creatures that author Jeppsen populates her novel with are elves, dwarves, wood sprites, goblins, stone giants and more, as she explores just how Mother Earth lives and gives energy to its people magical and human. This is a great G-rated tale that belongs on every home's bookshelf along with the stories of Hans Christen Andersen and JK Rowling's novels of Harry and Hogwarts. The story shows love, loss of good companions, death, evil incarnated and darkness that shadows both worlds, but it is a wonderful story of hard-earned Good overcoming the despair of Evil. Every young person should read this novel!

5.0 out of 5 stars War is Awesome Read for Any Age 24 Sept. 2013

Take the story of a young woman trying to cope with adolescence and the traumatic death of her mother, bring in the magical world of the fae, and you have The War of Odds, another 5-star winner from versatile author Linell Jeppsen.

When 16-year-old Sara Giddings moves with her father to Washington state - both of them trying to start over following the loss of Sara's mother - she soon discovers that their new home shares a tenuous boundary with the realm of the fae. More than that, Sara learns that she is, in fact, a witch - a good witch, endowed with an immense, untapped power to heal.

She is also the hope of the fae world, the one chance to heal Timaron, king of the Unseelie court, who has become demon-possessed and, in his madness, has declared war on the human world.

Aided by her human friends Nate and Chloe ... a wise and elderly cat, Hissaphat ... the wood-sprite Pollo ... and Muriel, a wood nymph ... Sara sets off on a mission into a dark and deadly world, her only weapons the powers that she has only recently discovered she possesses.

I fell in love with Jeppsen's writing when I read Onio, a romance involving what - before I started the book - seemed to me the unlikeliest of "leading men": a Sasquatch. Jeppsen pulled off the impossible in that book: she made me fall in love with her "Sasq."

In War of Odds, Jeppsen demonstrates her versatility, handling adventure, friendship and the discovery of true love in a setting where magic comes in shades of light and dark. It's a great book for young adults - but with a lot of appeal for us older adults too.
