Product description
From director Todd Phillips (“The Hangover” trilogy) comes War Dogs, a comedic drama based on true events, starring Oscar nominee Jonah Hill (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Moneyball”) and Miles Teller (“Whiplash,” the “Divergent” trilogy).
War Dogs follows two friends in their early 20s (Hill and Teller) living in Miami Beach during the Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows smaller businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a 300 million dollar deal to arm the Afghan military—a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.

War Dogs is loosely based on the true story of two young men, David Packouz (Miles Teller) and Efraim Diveroli (Jonah Hill) who won a three hundred million dollar contract from the Pentagon to arm America's allies in Afghanistan.
Released after the hugely successful The Hangover trilogy and three years prior to the monumentally successful Joker. It’s clear director Todd Phillips was making his transition from comedy to criminality with this feature, and it mostly works. Heavy on style, engaging performances and boasting a killer soundtrack keep the film being frequently a fun and furious time. However a very familiar and safe structure and presentation hold back the film’s originality and style, as well as it lacking emotional weight and substance.
When I say a familiar structure and presentation I literally mean The Wolf of Wall Street (Phillips would later take heavy inspiration from Scorsese with Joker) because War Dogs takes literally every stylistic trope from that, and due to the characters and their world the story follows a similar pattern. The fourth wall breaking narration and chapter segments get the job done, and the exposition heavy dialogue does come in barrages, but the performances and situations keep the plot entertaining.
The camaraderie and gleeful greed between David and Efraim is riotous to watch play out and due to the actors chemistry it does feel genuine. On the emotional weight front however the film falters, with David’s girlfriend (Ana De Armas) and daughter being pushed to the sidelines and mainly being there just to be part of David’s predictable arc. However the various criminal and business interactions are tense, funny and whip smart throughout, with some truly unbelievable and crazy real statistics and facts about the insane world of arms dealing.
The film has a garish and slick visual style. There is some nice cinematography and some creative and genuinely cool uses of slow motion (Hill’s Efraim riotously firing a machine gun in ultra slow motion accompanied by Pink Floyd) and heavy bright neon and glossy lighting to match the wide eyed and wealth filled attitude of the film. The soundtrack is absolutely standout though with a hit after hit from the Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill, to Aerosmith and The Who.
Jonah Hill gives a charismatic, cackling and reprehensible performance as the despicable and manipulative Efraim. The portrait of pure greed and power abuse, like a pettier and vicious Jordan Belfort. Teller’s David makes for a nice contrast, more morally focused, yet still driven by monetary gain to escape his lost and tragic job situation. Bradley Cooper is suitably intimidating and blunt as the imposing arms dealer Henry Girard. Ana De Armas unfortunately doesn’t get much to do here, but gives a fine performance as David’s concerned girlfriend.
War Dogs is a well put together watch that gloriously dives into its world of guns and gold. Featuring a gritty, greasy and dirty dive into a crazy true story, led by two strong lead performances and backed by a banger filled soundtrack. Unfortunately it is let down by a very by the numbers (for this genre) presentation and structure and a lack of any real substance and investment.
plays for jokes, which is fine and it is generally funny. the 'serious bits' fail miserably as the director&writers were unable to elevate the story above farce. bradley copper is his usual incapable self, but he's not helped by his character who is totally out of place in the film.
usual holly wood ending.
