Product Description

Compiled by Coyne’s sons, Eugene and Robert Coyne and featuring quotes from their father, friends and fellow musicians, I Want My Crown chronicles a vital period in Kevin Coyne’s career, one of the most fascinating and forthright artists of his time.

Featuring selections from all Coyne's Virgin albums, plus singles like "Lorna"/"Let's Have A Party", I Want My Crown presents for the first time on CD, unreleased sessions, a BBC In Concert from 1974, the Hyde Park show from the same year, unreleased performances for Rockpalast in Cologne, and more.

After a couple of half-hearted efforts over the years, Virgin/EMI finally make a proper attempt to do justice to the incredible talent that was Kevin Coyne, perhaps the only genuine singer of a non-derivative British Blues. This compilation is selected by his sons Eugene and Robert and attempts an overview of his definitive Virgin Records tenure between years 1973-80.

4CD's cover 11 albums made over this period, and are liberally sprinkled with previously unissued tracks, including a 4th CD of entirely unreleased concert material from 1974 (a BBC In Concert, and a legendary free show at Hyde Park featuring a career best `Marjory Razorblade Suite' which will be familiar and welcome on CD to anyone who once owned the `V' Virgin sampler LP).

Generally there are 4-5 tracks from each album tracing Coyne's career from 1973's legendary `Marjory Razorblade' up to the difficult but still essential `Sanity Stomp', (which like the aforementioned debut was also double, one disc backed by The Ruts, the other by Robert Wyatt..ah diversity where are ye now ?).

Many of the peaks in this collection come from Coyne's more naked depictions of personal hurt and pain hitherto languishing in long forgotten out-take compilation albums. Restored here, they are devastating, none more so than `Mona, Where's My Trousers' which actually features a pre-Police Andy Summers on Electric Piano providing the solitary backing for a harrowing dialogue between disfunctional father and son, both played by Coyne, which truly has to be heard to be believed. Coyne paid the price of such emotional intensity with an eventual breakdown, but survived to live out a rewarding and productive life in Germany, although somewhat neglected in his own country.

I have distinctly mixed feelings about this; firstly I'm delighted that this and Marjorie Razorblade have been released and both are highly recommended. As ever I'd have included some other tracks: 'Amsterdam' should be on any 'Best of' Kevin Coyne release for me.
I'm a also a little disappointed with the selection of duplicate bonus tracks on each and for this CD selection would have preferred selections like the magnificent 'Lunatic' from arguably the best John Peel Session recorded by Kevin and could have been presented here in it's entirity. As it is the only way to get them is either the out of print 'Peels Sessions' CD (superb btw) or by downloading the mp3 versions. And that's short-changing Kevin's legacy.

The real frustration is that, it appears, these are the only CD releases of Kevin Coyne's back catalogue and all the other albums, including a multitude of bonus tracks, are to be released only in mp3 form, which for music lovers means they'll only be available in a 'lossy' format.

A FLAC download option is the minimum that someone as talented and essential as Kevin Coyne deserves - come on, get on with it and preferably a CD release of all of these back catalogue titles.

Four and half stars would probably be a better rating than five. Kevin's sons, who really should be congratulated for making this project happen, but in my opinion (and it is only that) don't quite get the selection right. There are a few too many tracks from 'Matching Head and Feet' and 'Heartburn' which i think were the worst of the Virgin albums by a mile. Those are two albums that, are on a musical rather than lyrical level, are just a little bit too slick and bland mid seventies rock. There are better versions of some of the tracks from those albums on the excellent live album 'In Living Black and White' which could have featured instead...which leads me to the question... why not more from that album? Also i would have liked more from the fantastic 'Sanity Stomp' album that featured two great sides of music Kevin recorded with RUTS DC...material which doesn't feature here. Anyway, quibbles aside, this anthology contains nearly eighty tracks of some of the most original and moving folk and blues based music you will ever hear. Kevin's style was part Dylan, part Syd Barrett and part Muddy Waters...with a little bit of old fashioned music hall and Germanic political cabaret thrown in. He played his music and lyrics with utter passion and conviction...kind of a method acting De Nero of the UK's outcasts and the lost. He really got inside the feelings and thoughts of his characters..and could do this because he identified with them...probably because of his pre music life as a psychiatric social worker. I grew up with a brother with schizophrenia...in Kevin's music i found someone who seemed to understand . When most rock stars were getting caught up in self reverential navel gazing Kevin was setting the music of Poet John Clare to music and identifying with fat girls in search of a lost Shangri-La . Rest in Peace Kevin and remember out there that they cant kill us.
