Review

I still remember my early days as an author when my main experience of publicising my novels was to do everything I could to avoid it! I was terrified of giving talks and dreaded the thought of people sitting at home, listening to me on the radio. I wish I'd been able to read this book back then. Wannabe a Writer We've Heard Of? is fantastically informative in ways I would never have imagined. I've published more than 20 novels now but reading this, I've still learned many tips and tricks about promotion and PR I didn't know before and, more to the point, I shall be employing them. This guide covers not only getting into print, but how to get your book out thereA" to be appreciated by as many people as possible. The advice is invaluable and thanks to JWJ I'm now working on my first ever elevator pitch. (Watch out Stephen Spielberg - that means YOU!) Jane writes so entertainingly, and with such verve and wit, that anyone would enjoy this book, even those who don't want to be published and have never written anything longer than a shopping list - it's that much fun to read. To sum up I really, really recommend this guide - read it, learn from it and be braver than you think you are. Seriously, it could change your life. It's no longer enough to write the best book of which you are capable, get it published (or publish it yourself) then sit back and wait for people to buy. It won't sell unless people know about it. The arrival of epublishing means thousands of new books are appearing every month. To ensure yours is noticed you need strategy and tactics. Jane provides these, suggesting ways of ensuring publicity for you and your book with insight, humour, and experience. She has been there, done it, and made the video. Her guide is a master class in publicising and promoting your book. Some of her suggestions may terrify you (they did me) but they work. If you're an author you need this book. It will be one the best investments you ever make.

I really enjoyed this book - lots of useful ideas and the author's positive attitude is very inspiring. However, the online section needs updating as there's no mention of Google Plus and some of the info in relation to Facebook is out of date (currently only around 10% of your page fans will see your page updates, not all of them as stated here). But that's not the author's fault as these things do tend to change very rapidly. Maybe time for a new edition?

I have written two novels but this book will be a great help to me and my fellow friend authors who have self-published. Though both my novels are currently available on Amazon it would be nice to take another route, maybe now I shall be able to.

wannabe a writer we've heard of, is packed with useful information as well as being very funny. It's great for first time novelists like myself because, not only is it practical, but it's written in a way that's easy to understand. I read, wannabe a writer we've heard of after my novel had been rejected several times. Now, thanks to Jane Wenham-Jones sharing her knowledge of the industry, and giving advice and encouragement, I feel better equipped to rewrite the manuscript and confident enough to send it out again. I look forward to reading her next book.

As well as being hugely entertaining, I picked up some golden nuggets from this book which will save me a great deal of time, energy and money. One reviewer said that it was okay if we wrote in Jane Wenham Jones' genre but actually with a bit of free thinking - it can apply to all sorts of writers - you simply have to think outside the box as they say.

Jane Wenham-Jones describes her own books as being about "shagging and drinking" and this book has some useful advice for anyone writing in a similar style. For those of us writing in other genres, there's less of value. For example, she states that glasses are best avoided in author photos as they "cause all sort of problems with reflection". Appropriate for her market, but not if you're releasing an academic work where glasses are almost part of the uniform. Despite occasional nods to male writers and those in other genres, it's clear where her experience lies.

Good writers will always show, rather than tell - so what does this book show us? That it's worth supplementing your own material with quotes from other writers. That a how-to book is a good place to promote your other books. That proof-reading isn't an important part of the publishing process.

Most writers are expert procrastinators, but I feel that advice on how to get Amazon to remove reviews you don't like is wasting time that would be better spent on writing or pursuing more positive avenues for publicity.

An entertaining, occasionally interesting but ultimately disappointing read for writers seeking to improve their public profile.

Although this book is useful, funny and a good read, I did think that it wasn't well organised and that some parts were repeated. There are some very helpful tips, some of which I have put into practice now and others I will refer to when/if I become famous!

This book has become my Bible - the first stop for each task in launching my debut novel. WJ has made me braver in my plans. I'd think: Could I do that? And then she'd confirm: Yes, you can! And then offer simple examples of how to proceed, and develop those first thoughts into areas I hadn't even considered. From creating Postcards, to Press Releases, to Bio's; lists for target readers to how to take a good authors' photo. She highlights the mistakes you can make so you can avoid the trips and hazards ... I wish I'd got the book earlier!
