This book is a fascinating and invaluable resource for the aspiring (or accomplished) animator. It is truly a gift that these tools (the Walt Disney Sketchbook series) exist as an opportunity to study the architecture and the construction of such classic animation as "Bambi." It is amazing to me to see how beautiful these images are up close and in depth. As an animation student, this publication is everything I could hope for as a resource for gaining insight into character development and expression, and the intricate craft of animation.

HASH(0x91f7cef4) out of 5 stars Exquisite! 28 Jan. 2000
By rareoopdvds - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Unfortunately this book is out of print, and also I am writing a review under the 100.00 dollar version, which I dont own - incidentally I believe that version is signed by the two authors Johnston and Thomas. Moving on, this book demonstrates the beauty, skill and patience of the artists that worked on the film Bambi. It also shows their accuracy for realism as well as sensitivity to nature and the subject as a whole. Nothing to read here, but looking through the pictures and being in awe at the sheer beauty of these drawings, it would equal the time one would take to read an epic poem. I treasure this book for Bambi and the artwork has always held a special place for me as I am always inspired when I look at the delicate nature of the pencil lines in Bambi's neck and eyes, and his fragile legs. So innocent and pure which is the child in me that likes to come out and play. There is no finished work here, only pencil sketches of the characters Bambi, Feline, Flower, Thumper, and many others. Highly reccomended for the animation lover, as well as the animator whom will find it a great reference.

HASH(0x91f7be1c) out of 5 stars Disney's Sketchbooks - Great Resource for Artists! 26 Mar. 2001
By Bruce Gray - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This fine addition to the Disney Sketchbook series has many of the wonderful sketches done by Disney's animation department for Bambi, including many pieces from the storyboards, and several sketches of scenes that never made it into the final film. Artists that would like to study the Disney style of drawing and animation should find this volume a terrific addition to their collection despite its rather high price. As a student of art, and a fan of the Disney style, I highly recommend any of these books for your library.
HASH(0x9206c384) out of 5 stars Inspiring, amazing artwork 17 Nov. 2009
By Art Maven - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Fortunately, this may very well be the best and most affordable of the so called "Disney Sketchbook Series." The artwork is sublime. Marc Davis brought his extensive knowledge of animal anatomy to greatly improve the rendering of the deer over those in Snow White. He also studied emotional baby expressions from a psychology book to incorporate them into the drawings. Very anthropomorphic, you can feel human emotions coming out of these drawings without compromise to the essence of animal renderings. That's a pretty amazing accomplishment. But then add Tyrus Wong's abstract Pastels and watercolors as layout influences, and you have a Disney masterpiece. You also have mind-blowing artwork. This is a wonderful sketchbook that effectively surveys the height of the golden era of animation. It pleases artists and fans alike. I would have liked to have seen more layout work, particularly the work of Tyrus Wong. Fortunately, such work exists in the Johnston and Thomas "Walt Disney's Bambi" book which can also be purchased used. For what I value in Disney artwork, this is equaled or surpassed only by the art of Fantasia.

HASH(0x91f7c0cc) out of 5 stars great book but needs to show some finle ink dawings 7 Aug. 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
It is a great book that is nicely orginized with the artist notes inclutid which is helpful. But there is only charcoal scetchs in the book and I know that the book is a scetch book but it would be nice to see some finle ink over traces of the scetchs so you could see the finished picture also it would help to show how the charcoal scetchs become the Master piece Bambi. But besides that it is a great book.
sinserly,
Nathan T. Marshall
