The Village Idiot / Byfånen (2005)
A man armed with a bomb attempts to rob a bank. Things go wrong and the bomb goes off. Was it an accident or murder? Bought this set and the rest of the Swedish series 1 direct from Sweden (for considerably less that this seller) after becoming totally hooked after this was shown on BBC4. This is without doubt exceptional television. There are not enough superlatives to use to explain just how good it is save to say that the acting is faultless, the interplay between Wallander and daughter,Wallander and colleagues and Linda Wallander and Stefan Lindman is great and the lack of silly trite stories(a'la Midsummer murders and that ilk) refreshing. You forget the subtitles after a few moments and become hooked by the cleverly crafted storylines. Storylines moreover which do not fail to pull punches covering many taboo subjects. A total joy.

I would simply say that, if you liked the books or just the Kenneth Branagh TV episodes and don't mind subtitles, buy this! These four, full length Swedish TV programmes are brilliant interpretations. The way the stories are recreated is top-notch, the acting just right (the actress who plays his daughter sadly comitted suicide not long ago, but that shouldn't affect your viewing) and I didn't even mind my usual bugbear with police dramas in that there's too much personal involvement with the crime - other family members getting in on the action normally being a soft option to create tension. My only complaint is that I recall in the books he drove a Peugeot, but evidently no TV producer can see him driving anything than a Swedish car (Branagh a Volvo, here a Saab)!

We have some good detective programmes in Britain, but Wallander "knocks the socks off" most of them. It is so well crafted, excellent cast, excellent locations and of course excellent storylines.Wallander likes his drink and his opera, but thats where his similarity to Morse ends. His relationship with his staff and his daughter are very real.In "The Village Idiot" where he sits by his daughters bed in their house, with her childhood posters above the bed, although she is a grown up woman, he looks at her as a father would his young child and says quietly "I'm not going to cry" makes Wallander very human. The series is well worth it, although Branagh's performance was good, these have such a nice quality about them. Violence, humour, edge of the seat storylines it has it all.If you haven't seen Henrickssons performance, you have missed a treat.

This Wallender series lived right up to its advance publicity and word-of-mouth recommendations. These adaptations of the Mankell novels compare very favourably with respect to their inferior UK counterparts, that seemed to be a vehicle for Branagh to strut his stuff and which left the rest of the cast of Mankell's well described characters largely out of the picture.
I await the next set with enthusiastic anticipation.

This first set of TV films is essential viewing for any Wallander fan who wants to understand the backlines to the stories of the characters that are developed through the rest of the series.

The storoes are dark but gripping and beautifully acted and filmed.

Highly recommended.

The acting is excellent, strong characters dovetail well to make it seem like a real police team.It is an area of Sweden that I have visited many times and the atmosphere of the place is captured brilliantly ( although it is definitely not , as it may appear from the series , the murder capital of 'Northern Europe'!) The haunting melody used for the intro just sets the scene for me.After buying this boxset I ordered all remaining episodes of the first series and now I am trying to wean myself down to one episode per night !Quality drama, great television but intellectually satisfying, what's not to like !

This is basically going to be the same review as everyone else, but who cares?
I stumbled across the Swedish version of Wallander with Krister Henriksson purely by accident on BBC4. I had enjoyed the English version, but have never read any of the books or watched the earlier Swedish version with Rolf Lasgard.
Subtitles have never bothered me, unlike dubbed films, so I gave it a go. I was totally hooked after watching just one episode (The Brothers) and told anyone and everyone about this gem.
My Wife, who doesn`t like subtitles at all, eventually watched an episode and now is hooked too!
Don`t think the Branagh version is poor, it is very very good, but I think this has the edge

The Swedish version of Wallander is just about as good as television gets. Wallander, Svartman and Nyberg have more substance in thier little fingers than the English version which is still one of the best UK crime dramas for years. But the raw realism and fantasic writing behind this series is what makes it so much stronger than anything else around. I just wish the new series will be released on DVD soon. Genius stuff.
