Colony Leader Connor lives on a distant planet with his family - wife Helen, son John and rebellious teenage daughter, Siobhan - trying to keep order amongst other colonists who are gradually losing hope of ever being returned to Earth after their space-shuttle crashed.
The planet is swarming with mutant plant life which they call the grunge, that is incompatible with human life as it burns and disintegrates on contact. To contain it and protect their colony they build the eponymous Wall from the panels of damaged containers.
One night Siobhan and her friends decide that going down the Hill towards the Wall is a 'fun' way to push their boundaries, parental and physical, [despite mysterious lights and vehicles being seen in the distance beyond the Wall]. Luckily they're brought home safely by a patrol and all seems well...for now.
What Connor and the others don't know is that Siobhan and close friend Alec have sneaked out again and this time there's no stopping them.
They make it up to - and over - the Wall... seemingly oblivious to the potential dangers such curiosity and bravado will bring upon everyone they hold dear.
What will happen on the other side? Who or what is in the unknown vehicles - friend or foe?
Human or alien? Saviours - or the means of their destruction?
These and other questions/answers, in this fantastic book by sensational series writer Mikey Campling, will shock and enthrall you...until you read more of this superb series - start right now!
An interesting world with very natural emotional responses, this promises to be an intriguing serial and I look forward to reading part two.
Life is hard, the young want to escape but with no where to go.
Lights are spotted coming towards them, but is it salvation or death?
The Wall is the first book in a new serialized story from Mikey Campling.
This is the first time I’ve read any part of a serialized story. I was worried I’d feel like the story hadn’t got any where and was just building to the next installment. However, this felt really well set up. While obviously not a full story, we were given just enough action and plot to feel satisfied, and keep us on edge for the next installment.
I really enjoyed this quick read. We get just the right amount of world building, a great setting, a variety of characters and a great twist all in in just over 100 pages.
The next installment is due to be published in September, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes.
