Product Description

Synopsis

"Walks Through History: Birmingham" contains twelve walks within the city. Each walk is circular, with clear concise directions supported by easy-to-use sketch maps, illustrated by a host of photographs. Each walk covers a specific period in the history of Birmingham, and goes past historic buildings and other sites from that period. The history of the sites seen is given in a highly readable and informative style that brings the past alive, and is so written that the book can be read as a history book alone, independent of the walking.Together the twelve walks cover all the major themes in Birmingham's history, and if read chronologically they lead the reader from Birmingham's humble beginnings in saxon times to its position as wrokshop of the world. Birmingham has a compact city centre, and six of the walks are around the centre. The other six are in the suburbs, each starting from a railway station within easy reach of the city centre. The author, who was born in Birmingham, is both a keen historian and an enthusiastic walker, and has worked as a professional tour guide.

He is secretary of his local branch of the Historical Society, and to date has written ten walking books, each with an historic theme. For this book, he returns to his native Birmingham.

Never having been to Birmingham, I found this book to be very informative about the buildings in the city centre. I have not yet explored the others away from the centre but the author's knowledge and enthusiasm makes me want to do so soon.Just one caveat. The maps for walks 9 and 10 have been transposed in my edition of the book.
Recommended to all who are interested in architecture, industrial archeology and history in general.

A fascinating book, full of information about the city of Birmingham. Although a Birmingham resident, much of the information was new to me. Only two minor niggles: Bournville is incorrectly spelled - the name does not have an 'e' in the middle, and two maps seem to be in the wrong position. I am looking forward to following the walks described.

Whilst an interesting journal, some dates need checking. The General hospital in Steelhouse lane was still a General hospital when I worked there in 1968. It was some years later that the Childrens hospital was re-located there from 5 Ways. The General hospital closed in 1995, so I think the date given is approximately 50 years out.

I do not know why, but I was expecting something more extensive and detailed from this. The walk is very short and the description lacks academic detail. It would be fine if taking groups of tourists or children around the area but lacks the information and historical perspective for which I had hoped.

An interesting walk for someone not familiar with Birmingham but suffers from inaccuracies such as the Horseley Iron Works were in Tipton not Stafford, Birmingham Main Line is not part of the Grand Union etc

This is just one walk, not a series of walks as made out in write up. Seems like a good walk but not yet tried it.
