The content of this massive compendium is 100% superb reading and surpasses the show by thousands of miles!
Now, the book is a paper back omnibus type book with lovely thick paper which is glossy and fairly well made for the more conservative spender of comics.
Don't let that put you off, it is a superb book and with the single trade paperbacks retailing at 10 quid a book, you're better off with this full on load of story.
Don't bother yourself with the trades, start here and save a few bob.
Its great value for money.
If you're weary of the stories and are a fan of the show (Im not personally) just give it a shot and see how much better the stories are.

My recommendation is if you are a fan of the Walking Dead tv series, and you feel you want to read the largest chunk of the collected graphic novels in the lowest price per chunk format... pick up this compendium! -- squidoo.com
The Walking Dead is all about the living, the people who struggle to retain their humanity in the face of the unspeakable. So what does that mean? What good is being human when you're no longer the dominant species on the planet? And what's really left to hold on to? The Walking Dead is an examination of all those questions and more. -- John Hogan, The Graphic Novel Reporter

This is the definitive and best way to reading the Walking Dead comics, as it contains comics #1-48 of the series. The book contains over 1000 pages of pure zombie awesomeness. I don't really read comics, but I am a fan of the Walking Dead TV show so I was intrigued by the source material that was inspired from it. For TV fans of the show, this would be the best way to get in to the comics, as it contains nearly half of the volumes that has been currently published so far (Kirkman has no plans to end the comics series in the near future) and so it represents excellent value for money (you can get this for under £30 - buying each individual volume would be way over double this price). Of course, if you're looking for something more portable (yes, this graphic novel is HUGE, amazingly huge) then it would make sense to maybe buy some parts in volumes. But you can't beat the value of this.
The comic itself is even better than I imagined. While it is in black and white, the drawings are very detailed and the black and white style adds much more to the feel of the story IMO. It's got such an addictive plot too, I haven't read much of it so far, but from what I've read it is somewhat similar to the TV plot, and it's great. You could race through this it's that good.
Anyone could appreciate this - fans of the TV show, comic book fans, zombie fans, horror fans. It's totally accessible and SO worth the money! Brilliant comic series!
Don't hesitate in buying this! You won't regret it!

This is such a great buy. I discovered the TV series first and having watched all the episodes so being hooked I looked on the internet and got this. Its pretty big so it is quite awkward to get comfortable and have a good old sit down and read but its worth it.
This is the first compendium which contains the first 1-48 current issues of the walking dead in 8 chapters the same as the 8 Walking Dead books, it is entirely in black and white but the detail to the images is great and you soon find your self getting swept into this post-Apocalyptic world.
I would recommend buying the additional books about The Governor as its not included in this but not having them doesn't impact your understanding and enjoyment of this compendium its just a nice extra to have and after reading this I'm sure you will want them anyway!
It's also cheaper to buy it here then some other places as I did a little shopping around including postage and packing.

I bought the first book of walking dead (the 5/6 issue one) and honestly didnt dislike it but didnt love it either and I thought I was done with the series. I don't know why but something inside me told me to buy the compendium edition because I just seen that all the books had constant 4/5 star ratings so I bit the bullet and bought it.
And I am SOO glad I did. Its the best comic purchase I've made in years. It's fantastic. Every arc has shocks, great twists, brilliant characters, realistic pychological breakdowns (which would happen in an apocalypse) so many surprises and main characters dying that you are genuinly on edge when someone goes away from the group etc. No cheap suspense like in other books/tv shows where in the back of your head you kinda know they'll live. With the Walking Dead thats not the case.
Its a truly excellent series and I just recently bought up to issue 90 on Amazon. Its worth your money to buy it so I suggest you go and do

I've never read a graphic novel before but I'm a massive fan of The Walking Dead TV show and after having read the reviews on this I decided to have a bash with it and I thoroughly enjoyed it. So much so that by the time I was halfway through I had ordered the second volume.
Some of the characters are similar to those on the TV show and some I am unfamiliar with (although I am re-watching it now so maybe I've just forgot about them!). Also some of the story lines are similar although I don't believe they ever really follow through to the same end as the show.
The only gripe I have is that some of the character drawings look the same or similar so it can be hard to differentiate who you're looking at at times which can be frustrating but don't let that put you off as this is a great read!

The value for money of this is absolutely phenomenal. 1080 pages for £30 or so is a great deal. I came into this having watched one and a half seasons of the TV show - I've got to say, it was the right way to do it. Reading the first few issues whilst giving it the 'tv show' imagining is great, it helps you set yourself and set everything up. It is, however, NOT just a simple 'comic-form' of the TV series. Don't get that wrong - its very different, and to be honest, a lot more dark.
The TV series covers approximately 12 issues (a quarter of the book), but fleshes out a lot more detail and adds in its own scenes + characters (etc).
I strongly recommend this. I read it all in one evening (7 hours) and then lent it to a friend who stayed up until 7 am two nights running to read it. Really great book.

Interesting. Very different to the series. Not always a good thing. Probably more disturbing than the series. But it's good. Always good to see a different take on things.
