Review
It's like being given some sort of magical text... eye-opening and invaluable. -- India Knight ― Sunday Times Magazine
In terms of sheer did-you-knows per page it is one of the richest, densest, most rewarding books on nature I have read in a long time...its joy in deduction is infectiously delightful. -- James McConnachie ― Sunday Times
Learning so much in The Walker's Guide, the new book from Tristan Gooley, that I might have to take another long walk ... ― Nicholas Crane
I for one will never look at the British countryside in quite the same way again. -- Stephen Moss ― Countryfile Magazine
Gooley can show the most moonstruck how to interpret their surroundings. Even the intrepid Bear Grylls could learn a trick or two from this book. ― The Times
Anyone interested in walking out of doors at any time would be well advised to read this excellent book. ― The Royal Institute of Navigation
As with his earlier, equally important The Natural Navigator , this text is densely packed with information, engagingly and clearly written ... Every outdoor-lover should have at least one Tristan Gooley book in their library. He's attained national treasure status, as useful and educative as he is endearingly unique. -- Jim Perrin ― The Great Outdoors magazine

Firstly, I very nearly DIDN'T buy this book due to reference that the author was arrogant / patronising etc. But I so wanted to access the expertise that potentially last behind the personality. Thank goodness I did buy it. I didn't think the author was arrogant or patronising at all - dry humored, for sure! But I'm rather a fan of such and therefore found myself only further entertained and appreciative of the content - which btw is excellent!
Secondly, the content is super! Indeed it may be one of those rare gems that I now need to go purchase a hard copy version of.
So, if your own ego is in good shape, sufficient to survive the personality of a.n.other, and you genuinely seek to be better informed about the natural world around you, do add this gem to your collection!

I found this book fascinating. There was so much information to take in I would need to keep it for regular reference, but the prospect of learning how to calculate directions and distances from looking at the sun and stars has always appealed to me. Learning about the ground beneath your feet from the plants and the prospect of one discovery leading to another is so interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to walk with a feeling for adventure but also learn to appreciate what is seen and the relevant natural interaction.

The concept is great, but it's exceptionally wordy. It flits from half explaining one thing in a very wordy way to another. Things in general are not well explained and I do feel like the author comes across a bit arrogant. Sometimes I feel like he wants to tell you more about the many places he's been than stay on track with the book's concept.
It also describes where it should show. Making reference to how flowers look, or just naming them isn't very useful as I have to go and google each and every one. There aren't enough diagrams, especially considering it is a book which is trying to tell you about signs. Some diagrams which are explicitly trying to show you clues to ascertain a compass point, do not have compass points on the drawing which isn't very helpful.
I would buy it as the information is useful, but it's not the most fun read and I was really expecting it to be!

I had such great hopes for this book, particularly as I've started doing long country walks again recently. There is a lot of information here and I diligently read the first few sections, but I am losing the will to go on. Maybe what I wanted / hoped for / expected was something more user friendly and less verbose - a table would be simplifying it too much, but possibly tick lists or a quick reference summary? As it stands it is not terribly practical and as I probably won't finish it, I'm sure I'll miss out on lots of useful info.

I have really enjoyed reading this book. There have been a ton of moments during which I thought to myself "Huh, so that's why..." or "wow, that's awesome!"
There is a true wealth of knowledge to be obtained, and whilst some of it might not be relevant to you and your environment directly, it makes for some very interesting reading nonetheless!

This is a delightfully rewarding book to read and is laid out in such a way that you can take it as a reference or as a narrative. Practically every page taught me something new and presented it in such a way that i immensely enjoyed looking out to 'prove' what i was reading and was well rewarded.
I can see the trees in my garden, or the wildlife on walks in a different light now. The illustrations where provided are practical and effective.
Some of the authors observations may seem trivial but the way he has written and collected them is enlightening in itself and has certainly encouraged me to explore his work further. There is a lot of detail to encourage deeper research about a topic without it becoming too heavy handed so the work can cover many areas.
The observations are based in the western hemisphere (which suits me) but there is also some investigation and stories of the authors adventures and nature in other climates which i found authentic and very interesting.

I haven't read it from cover to cover yet but I have dip read it and have learnt many interesting things about the natural world: one such aspect is how to use the natural world as a compass.
