Don't order this book. It is not worth it, unless you have a special interest in Walker Evan's and want to have several of his books.
There is a newer edition of this book but it's even worse as it is smaller. Talking about "small", this book has 470 illustrations, as it says on its front flap, but this is somehow a misleading information because at least 150 of them are very small, many being ridiculously small. Some reproductions, for example, have less than 2.5 cm height. I've seen stamps bigger than some of the photos in this book...
That said, the quality of the reproduction is only average. Many other books have photos with better quality. I am adding photos comparing this book with "Walker Evans", published by the MoMA in association with Princeton University Press, ISBN 0870999370 . The book from MoMA is also a retrospective of Walker Evans's career. It has 365 illustrations but they are the real thing. There are no photos the size of a stamp there...
That book is about the same size as this book but plates are, in general, much larger. Despite being larger, plates in the MoMA book are of better quality and have more resolution, more life. It is not a big difference and bear in mind that there are several books, such as the 1988 edition of " Walker Evans- American Photographs", which have the best reproductions but those books are not as complete as the two books I am comparing here.
Look at how the resolution of photos from the MoMA book is better, despite the plates being much larger in the MoMA book. It goes to show the poor or average quality of the reproductions in this book.Read more ›
