I enjoyed every story of this little collection.
Each story is compact in its writing and, I felt, exactly the right length to convey its own message. There is always a twist in the tale or a clever punchline. The endings are mostly surprises. That’s good!
Some of the stories are dark. Some are humourous.
I particularly liked the slight, but understandable kinkiness of ‘Book Lovers.’ The ending made me chuckle.
‘Operation Flora’ is a Christmas tale with a difference. There is a tiny niggle of regret but the battered fairy comes out on top.
The signature story, ‘A Walk in the Woods,’ is good, but I preferred ‘A Walk in the Park,’ which was blatantly heading for a predictable reunion, but then there was a beautiful twist at the end.
The most hilarious story, again with a nice twist, is ‘The Secret Diary of Marvin Martin aged 14½’.
Its doesn’t take long to read this book and I guarantee that you will be delighted.

This brilliant collection of short stories has kept me glued to my kindle paperwhite screen for the last two nights. I could have quite happily read it all on the first night had I not started reading too late (lightweight, I know!).
All the stories in this collection are very clever and unique.
‘A Walk in the Woods’ is the first story and what an introduction to the collection! Heart-breaking! ‘Jake’ is equally emotional and heart-wrenching. All are emotional tales, in one way or another, and very much character led. ‘The Letter’ is particularly hard-hitting, especially considering it is only one page long. ‘The Brat’ had me holding my breath in hopeful anticipation. ‘The Battle’ broke my heart all over again. ‘William’ proves that there is always hope.
I think ‘Operation Flora’ is my absolute favourite story. It left me with a smile on my face. Closely followed by ‘A Walk in the Park’ with another happy ending. ‘The Lover’ is a very intelligently written tale of revenge. ‘Home’ is an extremely powerful story. We should all treat each other as we would want ourselves and our loved ones to be treated. A hard lesson learned by some. ‘Gus’ made me smile. I loved his story! It was a perfect one to end the collection with.
Overall, this is a beautifully written, thought-provoking collection. If you love a short story, then I’m sure you will love these. I highly recommend!

n excellent collection of short stories from Esther Chilton and a beautiful cover created by her talented daughter Charlotte too.
My thoughts - all the stories have much to offer but these are my highlights:
Ranging from sad and poignant pieces: Walk in The Woods, Jake, and The Letter to humorous tales of strangeness in the Book Lovers that will appeal to bookish souls.
Amusing endings in The Secret Diary of Marvin Martin aged 14 and a half, and a great twist in The Lover plus heart-warming stories about a new baby's arrival in The Brat.
The Godfather features a truly amazing cat, which is always appealing to me!
William is a touching war time story and Operation Flora is a Christmas tale with a difference.
Home sets the scene in a care home with regrets and ghostly tales delight in Gus.
A confident variety of stories which kept me entertained throughout.

This series of short stories broaches interesting subjects but without vividness. The prose is beautiful in places yet often fails to activate the latent potential of the characters lives. Perhaps this is a result of the perspective the author has chosen or hesitation in exploring the dirtiness of human emotions. I'd have liked to have seen raw unfiltered emotion. And for characters who were dark nature, to have that blackness belt me in the face. In reality, people aren't exclusively one trait. In storytelling, it's much more entertaining and thought-provoking when they are.

I've always enjoyed short stories, and I have said that before.
They are a way to drift off into an unknown world for a snippet of time, however, there are few that can evoke real emotions within their limited words.
I can happily say that this collection ticked all the above boxes.
From the weird and wonderful The Strangest Parents On Earth to the bittersweet The Letter, the vengeful humour of The Secret Diary of Marvin Martin aged 14 1/2 to the sadness of a child's view in William, there was so much to take in.
I would highly recommend this collection. A short read, but one that really sticks with you.

I've not read short stories for a long time, and this book has me hooked on them again. There was not one story in this book which I felt let it down. Every one of them held my interest and gave me a satisfying ending. Loved their twists and turns.

It's easy to see what makes Esther Chilton's short stories are regularly accepted by magazines and sought after by readers. Often set in everyday scenarios, each contains an iron grasp that twists and snaps it into a sometimes bleak, sometimes shocking, always unforeseen direction.

An enjoyable collection of short stories some light- hearted yet others rather sad. Well worth checking out. My favourite has got to be Operation Flora about a lonely little homemade fairy stuck in a big Christmas tree with hardly any trimmings.
