I bought the original release in 2000 and have to say I was still a bit sceptical about Headcat until I got this album. Previously I wasnt convinced by the quality of the recordings (just my opinion) but this isnt an issue with this CD.
3 Factors make this a great CD for me in comparison to the earlier releases.
Firstly there are 2 original tunes which have been written by the band - American Beat and The Eagle flies on Friday. 2 cracking tunes - which makes me hope that the next album from Headcat will be all originals!!!
Next I think the songs they have chosen to cover are much better and well suited to the band and their sound. Stand outs for me are - Crossroads and You cant do that.
Finally the major thing for me that makes this album so much better is the production. Cameron Webb is the producer here , making Headcat sound so much better. This is the guy who has been responsible for Motorheads great sound over the last 4/5 studio and live albums. For me it makes all the difference.
Instead of a strange covers band / Lemmy messing around with his mates etc: Head Cat to me, now sound like a band with momentum and I hope we have a lot more output from them - Including an album of original material and hopefully some live dates in the UK!
Unfortunately though it isnt Motorhead so i can only give it 4 stars.
On the first few hearings Crossroads was the one track I felt was a bit weak. It is done very much in the style of Cream and doesn't quite sit with the other more classic late fifties, early sixties sounds. However, it grows on you. I can't recommend this set highly enough. if you like classic rock n roll done in a full on way and great guitar playing with a Rockabilly tinge then this is for you - buy it!
