The quick-tempered Chief Inspector Boyd (Trevor Eve) reopens the files on four more unsolved crimes in this series of tensely gripping murder mysteries. Challenges facing Boyd's crack team of investigators include a victim of child abuse seeking revenge for the death of his twin, a family murder with vital evidence to be recovered from the bottom of the sea, the increasing likelihood of a mystery second man involved in a high-street massacre, and a cult film tied to the discovery of four bodies in a Notting Hill house, 1960s gangsterland and the background history of one of the team.

With the best minds in psychology, forensics and detection on the case, and cutting-edge techniques at their disposal, if anyone can track down a killer years after a murder, they can. Eagerly awaiting series 4, but in the meantime: rich scripts, great, generous ensemble acting, excellent production values. The only crime series I watch (although Amazon keep recommending all the 'similar' box sets), and always worth a second viewing. If you haven't seen it, it's a treat.

"Waking the Dead Season 3"is an entry in the acclaimed British mystery television series that ran from 2000-2007, when it was axed by the British Broadcasting Corporation in favor of `newer, more innovative crime dramas.' It played for some time on BBCAmerica on my side of the pond. It is a strongly -cast and -written ---by Barbara Machin, a woman, yay! -- police procedural/crime drama that follows Detective Superintendent Peter Boyd and his multi-discipline cold-case unit consisting of scientists and a psychologist as well as detectives at the Metropolitan Police. The squad utilizes the latest advances in forensic science, psychological profiling of the unknown criminal perpetrators and other modern investigative techniques to crack unsolved murders.

Upon even initial viewing, its differences from similar-sounding American TV series are great. The cop shop is anything but new and shiny, and poorly lit compared to American series that all seem to have been filmed on a sunny Southern California set. The actors aren't shiny and new, either. Trevor Eve, (Heat of the Sun [DVD]) who plays Boyd, began his career as beefcake, but he's older now, showing how thoughtfully he's aged, but still very watchable. He's backed, in the cop shop, by Sue Johnston as Dr. Grace Foley;, Wil Johnson, as DI Spencer Jordan; Holly Aird as Dr. Frankie Wharton; Claire Goose, as DS Amelia (Mel) Silver, and Tara Fitgerald (

Now, don't get me wrong, Waking the dead is a fantastic series. I love the show, but this is its weakest series.

The third series of Waking the dead is still a fine addition to the series, with the cast that was assembled in the previous two installments. It still develops the characters and after series two you were really getting into it and involved with the cast and knowing the faces and their characteristics. It is all still high-budget stuff with: top-notch actors (some you will have seen from other shows), great themes, an excellent and perfectly fitting soundtrack, superb production, and nice locations and sets. everything you got from the other two series, except the stories are weaker in this one. Not saying they are all bad, you may disagree, but compared with the previous two series, they are. I will give you a rundown of the episodes you get in this set (all 2 parters as usual.)

Multistorey - Now, after having read the reviews and write-ups about this one, I was expecting this episode to absoloutley blow me away and for me to be mesmerised at what I saw. One site I looked at said that this was the "Number 1" episode! Well, I went into it expecting to see some of the finest televison I had seen in years. But no, it was "Average", not the highest of my ratings. Multistory is not bad, it is watchable, but the plot is weak in my view. It does tie up all the loose ends, something Waking the dead dosen't always do. But I was expecting it to be much more better in quality.

Walking on water - This is an improvement. After the first part, I came out completley enthralled. But then it got too confusing after that with loads of things going off at once, and you couldn't keep up with it.

Excellent storylines. Well acted. The actors talk across each other just like every body does. I have got the whole series because of these qualities even though I know the out come. 18 carat acting and script. What more can you ask for with home entertainment. Buy the set . You won't regret it.

This episode where Mel and Boyd get marooned in the Thames estuary by the quick tides is especially interesting - the other episodes are good as all Waking the Dead of which I have 2 other box sets. Geat

What can one say about an incredible show. Just roll on the next. This series seems to get better and better as it progresses. There is a balance between good old Mr Plod police work, forensic investigation and criminal profiling. The characters are well cast and add depth to their parts. My introduction to the British murder most foul was "Wire in the Blood" - 5 stars -, then "Touching Evil" - 5 stars - now Waking the Dead. How does one pick?
Cannot wait to get my next shipment. Thank you Amazon.
