A very technical and descriptive book about an historical naval event. Stick with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars In the Wake 11 May 2013

It took me a while to find a copy of this paperback book and it was very expensive - over $200! Published in 1999 and written by Jo Stevenson, the wife of the captain of HMAS "Melbourne" It must be quite rare.

The story is about the collision of the Australian aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne with the US Destroyer Frank E. Evans in 1969 and the subsequent enquiry and military court action.

The author attended every day of the initial board of enquiry and the following Court Martial of Capt. Stevenson in the 1970s. She was extremely thorough with details and references and obviously a great support to her husband.

The book details virtually every movement and thinking behind the mistakes made and you feel like you are a part of the proceedings. The court martial was a complete farce and wrecked the career of Capt Stevenson.

Jo Stevenson was an amazing woman and it was a shame that she never saw the recent "apology" by the current Australian Minister for Defence who wrote to Capt. Stevenson stating that he was very badly treated at the time. Mr Stevenson is now in his nineties at this time of writing , May 2013. Mrs Stevenson died a few years ago.

This book is a fascinating read

I served aboard this ship until 1964 and the disaster didn't happen until several years later. It's just a great book that details the mistakes made and the aftermath that killed 74 men, many who were asleep when it happened. You will not be disappointed.
