Wake Me Up For The Elephants: Comic tales of a restless traveller Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 246 ratings

"The queen of travel writing." Amazon reviewer
“Travel writing at its best." Peter Kerr, Times best-selling author of Snowball Oranges
"Hilarious book. It lifts your mood and should be prescribed on the National Health Service!" Amazon reviewer
"The best memoir I've ever read." Reviewer and book blogger

From the author of the Amazon best-selling Greek travel memoirs, beginning with
Things Can Only Get Feta, this is a new collection of unique and funny tales. Wake Me Up For The Elephants has already reached #1 best-seller status in the UK, US and Australia in travel categories and has the humour and flavour of Marjory’s Greek memoirs but with a broader canvas: Africa, Greece, Australia, Fiji, Scotland and Ireland. They are exotic, romantic locations and the stories are based on real journeys, some of which were taken as journalistic assignments. They introduce the reader to wild locations, eccentric fellow travellers and hilarious, often scary, situations: dodging wild animals on safari and a male stalker in Mombasa; dance torment in tropical Fiji; a supernatural mystery in the Australian bush; a beach gallop in Ireland led by a lobster fisherman; a boating mash-up on the exquisite Greek island of Paxos.

But this collection is not all fun and frolics. Some of the stories, particularly from Scotland, are undercut by nostalgia as the author grapples with the notion of a homeland and where a restless traveller belongs when the wandering, and the laughter, stops.

This book is also in part a prequel to her Greek travel series, revealing the author’s unforgettable adventures just before embarking on her four-year Big Fat Greek Odyssey.

I absolutely loved this latest book from Marjory McGinn as I just knew I would. I have read both the Peloponnese series and also her delightful Bronte in Greece novels. She truly is a skilled storyteller with a keen eye for detail and a perceptive judge of character. Wonderfully descriptive, She takes the reader to South Africa, the South Sea Islands,Australia Scotland, Ireland and Greece. I have been amazed at some of her experiences and laughed aloud at others. I particularly loved the stories about Scotland and Ireland as these are countries close to my own heart. Her travels around Scotland with her mother were both poignant and hilarious. I'm still chuckling at some of the experiences they shared. This book is a delight with fun observations and lots of background information which make it a treat from start to finish. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Marjory has led a very interesting life, and she regales us with some of her travel tales, from her journalist days to her heading back to her homeland of Scotland. She dodges lecherous men in Africa, falls under the ethereal spell of a legendary Australian landmark, tours the Highlands and islands with her indomitable mother, and is a welcome guest for a thespian Scottish laird. Would that we were all so adventurous of spirit

The author’s Greek travel memoirs and novels have captivated me (and thousands of other readers, I would think) over the past decade. This latest book is superb and Marjory McGinn widens her horizon beyond Greece (although there’s one tale from Paxos island) to take readers on amazing journeys across the globe, to exotic locations such as Kenya and Fiji. The eight tales feature wonderful characters, underpinned by the author’s sparking prose, impeccable research and great wit. Some of the stories had me laughing out loud. Highly recommended.

Once again I have been drawn into Marjory's world and been held captive by her stories. Written in her warm, chatty style we learn about some of her travel tales around globe. A collection of stories from Australia, Africa, Fiji, Scotland, of course, her beloved Greece plays a role too.

The authors mother/daughter trip to Scotland was very poignant and precious memories were made.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and, along with her Peloponnese series of memoirs, I highly recommend reading this authors books.

Thank you for an interesting and enjoyable journey.

Really loved this memoir, especially the Scottish chapters. The author has a warm chatty writing style which I really enjoyed. Marjory McGinn includes a lot of very interesting facts about the places she's visited, as well as lots of hilarious anecdotes about some of the local characters and customs. I was cringing when I read about some of the Scottish Highland B&Bs and hotels, having experienced similar treatment myself. As a Scot I appreciated all the thorough research into the history. I loved reading about her hilarious African safari experience and also Paxos, which sounds absolutely beautiful. This book left me feeling very satisfied, like I'd been exploring. I'd definitely recommend it.

I love all of Margory's books and have read all of the Peloponnese series several times. This one was slightly different, with lots of smaller stories of travel trips. I read it in one setting and laughed so much I kept my husband awake. Even my (adult) son came into my bedroom to investigate the hysterical laughter. It was lovely to get to know a little of Mary's character in this book too. Well recommended, it has to lift your mood, it should be prescribed on the NHS!

The passage of time can be deceptive. It seemed an age since Marjory McGinn’s previous book A Donkey On The Catwalk was published, but in fact it was slightly less than two years ago. That book was the fourth in Marjory’s series about living the expat life in Greece, and now it’s time to welcome Wake Me Up For The Elephants, a book of reminiscences and anecdotes of her travels leading up to the Grecian adventure.

And what a fine vicarious journey she takes us on, from Hanging Rock in Australia to the Highlands of Scotland. Marjory brings her keen eye, lucid prose and sense of humour to bear on landscapes and their inhabitants, wild animals and their counterparts in the human zoo. Some of the book’s chapters had their origins in assignments for various newspapers, and the pen-portraits of some of her journalist travel companions are hilarious, although you do find yourself wondering how she could have endured being far from home with some of the people she writes about.

Hearts In Exile, a strong chapter in A Donkey On The Catwalk in which Marjory explored the meaning of what it means to be a migrant, settled in the new country but still feeling the tug of home, has its echo here in Chapter 4, Hysterics in the Heather, a description of a trip Marjory made with her mother, Mary, to their native land of Scotland. This was a sentimental journey for both women but particularly Mary, and four years later Marjory, husband Jim, Mary, and canine companion the inimitable Wallace returned to Scotland to settle near Stirling. A leap of destiny indeed.

For this reviewer, a book by Marjory McGinn is always worth waiting for. More, please.

I have been a fan of Marjory McGinn’s writing since I first read Things Can Only Get Feta, and I’ve read every one of her captivating books. This memoir is just as good as the others, but even better, the author takes us travelling to countries across the globe recounting trips she did in the past, many of which were for her journalism job in the 1990s. I started in Kenya at the famous Treetops hotel; I then went to Australia, Fiji, Scotland, Ireland and Greece. What an adventurous life Marjory has lived, both as a single journalist and with her husband, Jim. I loved all the stories; they are all so well written, but those about Kenya, Australia, Ireland and the north of Scotland made the greatest impression. There is a wealth of information, local colour and humour in all the accounts. There are also some moving and poignant reflections, and it was lovely to travel so widely and learn so much. Thank you, Marjory. This was a marvellous book. I loved it!

In Wake Me Up for the Elephants, Marjory McGinn takes us along as she travels to a variety of places in eight short stories. In Kenya, she and her Aussie pal-journalists enjoy safaris, taste Zebra and go to discos all to the angst of Jason, their irritable guide-protector. In Victoria, Australia, her visit to the haunted Hanging Rock leaves her baffled with mysteries while in the Fijii Islands she is almost taken away by a local strange concoction that sends she and her friends into a dancing frenzy. In Scotland, she visits castles, strange B & B's with her mom, meets an eccentric hitchhiker, interviews the last family member of one of Scotland's oldest families and goes on to enjoy horseback-riding in Ireland. Finally, she and her husband have boat mishaps in Greece and they even stumble onto a nudist beach! This is a great recap of living the life.
