Overlooked gem

This is a very interesting album. While the Pogues were wonderful with Shane MacGowan, his absence on this album allows the other members -all extremely talented musicians in their own right - to really stretch out. The unique blend of instruments is captured with incredible clarity by producer Michael Brook, and the quality of the songs is very high, covering a wide range of styles. Don't overlook this one - it's well worth your time.

No shane but an extra dimension

OK I believe this was the first album that did not have Shane McGown at the helm, but does not suffer because of it. In fact even with the song writing shared out there is a consistent smoothness to the music, the raw edges (mostly caused by McGowan's caustic vocals) are gone and a new musicality comes through.

It is a different sound and The Pogues have lost some of that rawness but it is still a great listen and one that I happily play mixed with the first three albums.

Don't be put off it.

Like The Kinks without Ray
Like Queen without Freddie
Like The Stones without Mick
Like The Pogues without Shane, this album should have been an absolute car-wreck, but remarkably instead, what you are presented with is a confident, self-assured, highly enjoyable record.
Joe Strummers fingerprint are all over the album (he replaced Shane on their previous tour), & there is defiantly a much more punk feel to the music.
Not as good as The Pogues first three records, "Red Roses..", "Rum, Sodom.." & "If I should Fall..", but still worthy addition to The Pogues canon.
