HASH(0x97559684) out of 5 stars Her story will make any Beatles fan jealous 3 Nov. 2003

I came upon this book in the public library in my hometown and thought it would be interesting to read about the life of an Apple Scruff. I found myself wishing more than ever that I had been alive while the Beatles were together so that I could have left home to become an Apple Scruff. Yeah, they exemplified the youth of the time who thought they had no responsibilities in life and could do whatever they wanted, but they were still cool. These people got to know the Beatles better than any regular fans ever could. You will become so immersed in this book if you read it. I recommend it to all Beatles fans!!! Peace.

Unique look at the Beatle world. Real people (although doing some unreal things) sharing a moment in time with the fabs. This is like no other Beatles book. Not so much about the music as it is about the fans and the Beatles as people.
Just a fabulous book.

HASH(0x97d49738) out of 5 stars Once you start, you may NOT want to put it down!!! 27 Feb. 2007

Carol Bedfords INTERESTING tribute to The Apple Scruffs. She says at the books end,it was John's death that led her to write Waiting for the Beatles....."The Apple Scruffs were unique among fans. They were not dangerous to their idols. The Scruffs all felt that,if they had been there,John would never have been killed - even if they had to throw themselves in front of him. We were the world's most loyal fans to the best musical phenomenon in years. We were happy and proud to know the Beatles and hope they felt something of the same towards us. As long as the Scruffs are around to remember, the Beatles will survive. And the Apple Scruffs will still be there - waiting for the Beatles." ~ When you start reading this book, you might not want to put it down. It was one of the most interesting books I have ever read.

HASH(0x9842e93c) out of 5 stars Apple Scruffs to the Core 29 Aug. 2006

"Now I've watched you sitting there
Seen the passers-by all stare
Like you have no place to go
But theres so much they don't know about Apple Scruffs." -- George Harrison, 1970

George's classic piece about the Apple Scruffs, the fans (the majority of them female) who waited for the Beatles to emerge from Apple Studios is very apropos and underscores this entire book. Beatle fans will undoubtedly love it; others will enjoy it for its purely historical perspective.

Bedford's claim that an American Beatles' Fan Club was conducting tours to the grave of Louise Harrison, Beatle matriarch whose son George would later pen the lyrics to "Apple Scruffs" was rebutted by Pat Kinzer Mancuso in her book, "Do You Want to Know a Secret? The Story of the Official George Harrison Fan Club." According to Bedford, these alleged tours were naturally upsetting to the Harrison family and the privacy George cherished. Mancuso knew the Harrisons personally; when Louise passed away in 1970, Harold Sr. gave Mancuso his blessing when she raised money through her fan club to donate to the hospital in which Louise had been treated. She states that at no time did she ever direct anybody to the final resting place and at no time did she ever disclose any information about it. Be sure to read "Do You Want to Know a Secret? The Story of the Official George Harrison Fan Club" as a good companion book to this one.

Still, this book is a fascinating look at Beatle history; no doubt George Harrison himself had a big smile on his face as he watched the Apple Scruffs awaiting his (and the other Beatles') appearances. George most likely had a big smile on his face when he penned these lyrics:

"Apple scruffs, Apple Scruffs
How I love you, how I love you
In the fog and in the rain
Through the pleasures and the pain
On the step outside you stand
With your flowers in your hand, my Apple Scruffs." -- George Harrison, 1970

Thanks to this wonderful book, more people will know about the Apple Scruffs. Oh, and you'll want to listen to the song as well. It's on "All Things Must Pass."

HASH(0x9842e948) out of 5 stars There's so much we don't know about Apple Scruffs... 12 Oct. 2007

I first encountered references to this book when I was looking for more information on the George Harrison song, "Apple Scruffs". I was highly intrigued and finally managed to score a copy of the book, and I'm so glad I did.

What an engaging book! The photos are a delight, as are the copies of hand-written notes from George Harrison to various Apple Scruffs. If you're a George Harrison fan, this book will really give you great insight into the man, but any Beatles fan will almost certainly enjoy this unique perspective on the Fabs.

The book is descriptive, I almost felt like I was there, and in many ways, I wish I had been, especially now that I've read this story.

Note that there is some controversy about this book. Apparently, some of the author's claims are disputed, and her version of events has been called to question in some cases. Still, the book is a brilliant memoir of the fascinating phenomenon of Beatlemania at its most obsessive, and well worth reading.
