Product Description

Product Description

High quality Blue Note reissue from Paris based label Heavenly Sweetness. This LP features quality sound taken directly from the original master tapes, 180g vinyl, heavy cardboard sleeve and original artwork. 'Wahoo!' sees pianist Duke Pearson set up one of his hippest sessions of the 60s, to create a lyrical batch of soul jazz tracks, with that slight edge of darkness that he was putting into his best work. The band includes James Spaulding on alto and flute, Joe Henderson on tenor, and Donald Byrd on trumpet. Titles include "ESP", "Fly Little Bird Fly", "Farewell Machelle", "Bedouin" and "Amanda". Personnel: Donald Byrd (trumpet), James Spaulding (alto saxophone, flute), Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone), Duke Pearson (piano), Bob Cranshaw (bass), Mickey Roker (drums).

The overlooked pianist/composer/arranger Duke Pearson(1932-80) recorded this excellent album in New Jersey on November 24, 1964 with a stellar sextet including Donald Byrd(trumpet); James Spaulding(alto sax, flute); Joe Henderson(tenor sax); Bob Cranshaw(bass) & Mickey Roker(drums).
The six memorable tracks feature five Pearson originals and one from Donald Byrd. The music can be described as adventurous and imaginative hard bop with impressive solos from Henderson, Spaulding & Byrd spurred on by a superb rhythm section.
For some mysterious reason 'Wahoo!' has always been difficult to find but enthusiasts of BLUE NOTE hard bop should make every effort to hear this exhilarating music.

Duke Pearson is one of the greatest arrangers ever to work at the Blue Note studio. Wiki all the records he is an accompaniest on and realize there lie some of Jazz finest sides. All his solo releases on Blue note & Atlantic are super but this one has to be one of the more swinging sets from Duke hoever if I were honest a number of others take the title. Again super quiet vinyl pressing and nice remaster here-get it!!!!!
