Product description
Review
'In the Mottl orchestrations of four of the five Wesendonck Songs, Wagner's own of the last, Träume, Dausgaard has the luxury of his compatriot Stemme. She brings heroic refulgence as well as sensibility to music that luxuriates in the chromatic agony and ecstasy of Tristan und Isolde.' --The Sunday Times, 26/05/2013
'Nina Stemme is today's outstanding Wagner soprano, increasingly worthy of being mentioned alongside her great Swedish predecessor Birgit Nilsson. Her Wesendonck songs are the centrepiece of a most attractive Wagner concert, really well played by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra under Thomas Dausgaard.' --Mail on Sunday, CD of the Week, 02/06/2013
'Stemme's singing is glorious throughout and the disc is worth hearing for her alone. Other highlights of this all-Wagner offering include the Siegfried-Idyll, two versions of Der fliegende Holländer overture, and an energetic reading of the prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.' --Opera Now, July/August 2013
'[Stemme's] approach remains expressive and searching, with excellent diction that rides the lighter orchestration effortlessly and makes even Mathilde Wesendonck's more plonking lines sound quite distinguished.' --BBC Music Magazine, August 2013
'In music where sentiment can easily spill over into sentimentality, such clear-eyed and unforced expression accordingly has much to recommend it.' --International Record Review, October 2013

In fact, this should, I think, be in every Wagner enthusiasts' collection. It's a lovely recording technically, to start with, and - pace MBR - it's an interesting and imaginative programme. It's really fascinating to have both the early and the final version of the overture to the Dutchman, both taken at a briskish pace. (See below!) The Idyll certainly benefits from the chamber orchestra treatment, and the inclusion of the instrumental version of Traume (one of the Lieder) is very welcome. The other big plus is the Lieder themselves, and Nina Stemme's rich, expressive reading of them. That powerful but restrained delivery is quite beautiful backed by the chamber orchestra. I wouldn't want to be without the Astrid Varnay version, nor that of Cheryl Studer - but one really should have all three.
The only slight oddity on this record - and a track that I'll probably give a miss to on most playings - is the Prelude to The Mastersingers. Beautifully played - but taken at such a gallop that I can only assume that the conductor had an urgent appointment elsewhere.
Wagner named the Siegfried Idyll so appropriately. It truly is a gorgeous tone poem and a much neglected one. To have paired it with the Wesendonck lieder was a big mistake as the latter drowns out the Idyll.
